Quote: | Why not just join in on those alley cat races?
Racing around in traffic - without lights or helmets - wearing skin-tight jeans and chain wallets - doesn’t appeal to as many “regular” (i.e. sane) people and it was a little harder to get excited about. Surely, I thought, we could combine elements of all these other types of races and add a little zest to the Louisville cross culture. |
so, it's basically a sort-of alleycat with $3K bikes and full kits? _________________ ------------[] O |

I knew that part would make someone mad. I didn't write it, nor have I ever participated. I'm guessing there probably are bikes that go from the $500-$3k range or maybe a little more but from my understanding most of the up-tights don't participate _________________ Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle |

First let me swear my allegiance to Louisville... my 40272 ass tattoo, my 502 representin hoodie, my 8a loving, shakin shelia noise pollutin, louisville is for lovers listening...
Yup, made in through a few lines before I just skimmed. I think cycle cross style alley cat would be fun. Some folks I know did a mini bike cross race late night in BC and said it was great fun. I like Louisville's thinking, I mean the bike thru beer tent at the cyclecross races is a great idea!
Here in lex we do get a good showing of the serious riders with expensive bikes, etc at our races. I have talked to other racers who never do any of our races but race everything else. The response I received was, "not until you get an insurance policy."
Dunno, glad to see differing cycle communities trying new things. I know I love to watch cyclecross, drink beer, ring my cow bell, and talk some shit. |

oh, wait, I get it now. Good point. Both groups are more diverse than they consider each other. I think it is safe to assume that the author of the piece has little to absolutely no real experience with an alley cat race. _________________ Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle |

no, I'm not mad, I was just underscoring the hypocritical nature of that statement.
There's just as much posturing, flock-following, trendiness and overall lameness in the world of sanctioned cycling events as there is in a bunch of kids in whatever podunk town USA adopting "bike messenger culture" (for lack of a better term).
Everyone thinks they're doing something new and exciting and trailblazing when they're actually not... so why not just talk about what it is for what it is? No need to revert to easy, overused stereotypes and questioning other consenting adults' sanity.
One could just as easily question the sanity of "regular, sane" folks who spend $4,000 on carbon Zipp discs to give them some sort of advantage running up hills and racing through muck. _________________ ------------[] O

I'll pass. it sounds........boring.
Sounds like a bunch of old rich cyclists wanting to have an alleycat but their wives wont let them because they might get hurt.
And it sounds like I don't have enough specialized shit to participate in this. You know, specialized pint glass for the beer lap, specialized ringtone on my black berry, specialized tattoo where no one can see it, $4000 specialized cross bike that I only train on, $4000 specialized cross bike that I only race on and happens to be identical to the one I train on, etc.
And yet another comment about tight jeans and fixed gears. I mean why cant people realize that some of us were commuting on fixed gear years ago before bikes were even considered cool?
Oh wait, are they giving away specialized tshirts or anything to the last place finisher? if so, i'm in! _________________ The sound of a car door opening in front of you is similar to the sound of a gun being cocked. ~Amy Webster |

"Hey, alleycats look cool."
"Yeah, but they're scary. Hipsters might laugh at me."
"True dat. And traffic. Cars are terrifying. Why can't they have alleycats on a closed course so we can drive there?"
"You mean like a cross race, but....*whispers* not sanctioned?"
"Woah. Totally. It'd be all outlaw and stuff. We could, like, invade a hill behind a high school, or in a park."
"That'd be so badass. We could ride around in a circle off the streets where it is safe. But still edgy. Because we wouldn't have permission to be there. Even though it is public property."
"And we could have code names."
"We're so cool." |

"We could make us up some matching kits that are all black with our code names on them."
"you are a f'in genuis. oh and we could buy some of those arm warmers with tattoo prints on them"
"Hell yeah! See if the kits can be tear away so if the parks and rec people show up to bust us (turn off the lights) we can rip them off then head back to the car"
"This is going to be so bad ass! dont forget your super expensive camera"
"I know right? but what bike are you going to ride and what are you going to wear on the way out there?"
"I'm not sure yet. I will let you know."
"I think I'm gonna wear my specialized hoodie."
"which one?"
"not sure. and dont say a fucking word to your wife about this!"
"and only invite riders who spend at least $2000 on their wheelset, shave their legs, and drive a 2005 or newer sedan with a bike rack. oh, and their wives have to own a bike even if they never ride it."
"i swear i wont. oh, what soccer field are we doing this at again?" _________________ The sound of a car door opening in front of you is similar to the sound of a gun being cocked. ~Amy Webster
