bah.

same old argument that conservative types and other overly proud freedom-loving consumers love to throw around whenever they get pissed off at seeing cyclists moving about more freely than they are.

they always, ALWAYS have to play the "tax card" because it's the safest most polarizing argument they've got.

problem with that logic is that they fail to recognize that hardly any cyclist eschews a motor vehicle altogether, and therefore likely pays the very same taxes and costs regarding owning a vehicle as any other driver.

Also, paved areas for transportation should not necessarily be looked upon as simply a playground for cars. That is a system that we have fallen victim to only because of our habits of being so dependent on cars. Penalizing someone because they have made a choice to simply use another form of transportation that is not a car is discrimination. Besides, even if you enacted an additional tax on cyclists or registration fees, or whatever... the amounts generated by such a small, fringe group would be beyond negligible.

They should just come right out and say that the main reason they loathe cyclists is because they've gone fucking crazy, like this bitch.

there should be a walking/jogging tax to pay for the sidewalks and crosswalks.

A public health and environmental degredation tax should be placed on cars and gasoline to pay for bike lanes, city parks and more greenways.

I have no problem taking a regular lane when there isn't a bike lane.

But let us consider only one aspect: Do cyclists pay their way?

Some argue that roads are paid for entirely by user fees such as gas taxes, automobile registration fees, and the like. The argument goes that cyclists don't pay these user fees and so they shouldn't be allowed to use the roads.

Is this true?

Consider the facts:

1. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FWHA), 92% of the funds for local roads--the ones most often used by cyclists--come from property, income, and sales taxes. Bicyclists pay these taxes just like everyone else does.
2. FWHA calculates that 92% of federal highway funds come from user fees. But 8% come the general fund, so even a bicyclist who owns no car contributes to federal highway funds, too.
