I received this a few days ago from the LexArts listserv. Thought some of the designers, artists, and metal-work folks on here might be interested.
(copied from the submission guidelines on the LexArts site)
2008 Artists Bicycle Rack Competition
Request For Proposals due June 30, 2008
Background
ARTEK Lofts, with help from LexArts and the Urban County Arts Review Board, plan to commission three (3) bike racks during the Summer of 2008. Artists are asked to submit designs (drawings or sketches). A jury of ARTEK and community representatives will select three (3) designs to be realized.
Why is ARTEK hosting this competition? First, you can’t spell ARTEK without ART. The development itself is living sculpture, and each aspect has been thoughtfully and artistically designed. Secondly, ARTEK is committed to sustainability, accountability and community. By setting an example of collaboration between artists and real estate developers, ARTEK hopes to be a catalyst toward the integration of art in our public and private spaces. Thank you for your participation and interest in this exciting project.

I think it's a good idea, and kudos to them for allowing this opportunity to local artists, but I do have some criticisms of the plan: They are offering commissions of $1000 for each of three designs that will be selected... the thing is, artists are responsible for the construction and delivery of the finished piece, which seems to limit the field of prospective participants if you ask me. Plus, $1K doesn't seem like much of a commission when you factor in the cost of materials, labor, and transportation of the pieces. The winning designers / fabricators may end up paying more out-of-pocket when it's all said and done... |

As much as I like ARTEK lofts... the rear building's first floor is devoted entirely to the auto...

I still contend that the design looks like the service entrance to an amusement park facade. |
