I was riding down S. Limestone (away from town)the other night for the first time in a while and all of a sudden I come up on these huge freaking plates in the road right across from the parking garage construction. After some very evasive maneuvering I managed to dodge the plates and continue on my way, but I thought it'd be nice to warn others about potential hazards like that.

Also, It's been a while since I've been down Maxwell, what with all the construction, but I noticed today that they have pits of gravel in the middle of the road that are just waiting to swallow someone's front tire.

Anyone else got stuff to watch out for?

I've dubbed the entire length of the Euclid bike lanes "The Gauntlet". The worst driving in town occurs down this stretch of road, I'm sure of it.

get set up for the death star run. when you get to limestone you have to shoot a photon torpedo into a 2 meter exhaust shaft. that is what i think about every time i ride down euclid. i was last hit by someone turning left onto woodland and ran into me. the other problem is people pulling into the bike lane when turning onto euclid. those at the bike summit may remeber the lunch speaker talking about the law in boulder, co where if you pull into a bike lane before turning it is punished equally to running a stop sign. something similar needs to be in place here.

Those plates are pretty annoying, but thankfully don't cause much damage to roll over. However, Clay's Mill is a deathtrap right now with the construction and MASSIVE potholes.

Also, a law that would be nice is the one Idaho just enacted: http://bikehugger.com/2007/05/thats_it_im_moving_to_idaho.htm where cyclists are to treat red lights as stop signs and stop signs as yield signs.

Maxwell is in REALLY bad shape right now, so definitely avoid it until they're done re-paving, which might be the end of next week if we're lucky. For some reason they've decided to do it in the middle of the day, which is just ridiculous.

(Saturday, Nov.24) huge square shaped hole, cut out on Limestone, headed towards downtown - right near those horrible Kimball Square developments... watch out for it, because it takes up nearly the entire width of the road.

This one is a tire / wheel killer for sure.

1-2-08: There's a huge pothole near the corner of Rose and Euclid, right in front of the entrance to Papa John's parking lot. The hole itself isn't in the bike lane, but it's close enough that all the debris is scattered in it. I'm talking about baseball-sized chunks of asphalt just waiting to take someone down.

You can, however, ride up on the sidewalk to get around it. The curbs on that section of Euclid aren't that tall, so you could hop them pretty easily.

As I type this it is ridiculously warm outside but about a week ago it was ridiculously cold. That being said, watch out for salty roadways and icy turns. When I was riding home from work the other night I inadvertently ran over a huge pile of salt in the euclid bike lane. The damn thing was almost a foot tall and probably would've pitched me if I was on one of my fixers. Luckily the LHT plowed it like the Grave Digger and away I rode.

Bike lanes seem like a good idea in theory but I find that they often become more like a gutter- accumulating all types of trash, broken glass, and roadway detritus. If you like flat tires and nasty surprises.. thats great. I figure if I'm riding where many a car tire had passed before, that I will always be riding on clean asphalt. Big thanks to all the cars for collecting all those bottle shards and roofing nails.. better your michelins than mine.

Its not just the piles of salt that'll get you. I almost went down yesterday in a turn because the road was covered in a thin layer of loose salt. Be careful out there kids.

As for Bibendum, hell, I'd bust out some sweet tricks too if I had a giant inflatable crash suit to protect me when I fell.

Even more trivia: his name comes from the Latin term "now is the time to drink". I think we may have found our new mascot.

3-1-1. That's LexCall. If it doesn't work on your cel phone, call 425-2255. I keep it programmed in on my cel, and they're actually pretty responsive.

You can also report--and track--city service requests via the LexCall website.

2-5-08: The potholes are back in front of Qdoba/ Papa John's on Euclid. They fixed the ones that showed up a couple weeks ago, but I guess that cold snap made them all reappear.

So now the bike lane is coated in a nice thick layer of gravel and shit. Not only that, but cars are driving into the bike lane to get around the potholes. I think I'll call Lexcall tomorrow.

I was so happy when they reasphalted Euclid from Rose to Upper, but was disappointed that the pavement began to crumble within only a few months. The underlying concrete is badly deteriorated and the city should have noticed this and completed more in-depth repairs. It's a royal pain to bike on it now.
