hi,
my bike was stolen from UK's campus between 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. yesterday in a high traffic area (behind the Mines and Minerals Building, close to the Boone Faculty Club). i've ridden it to work and parked it there for years without any issues. i'm not sure if there's an increase in bike thievery right now or what, just wanted to let other cyclists/commuters know. i used a pretty standard cable combination lock. it was locked at the time, so the the dirty arsehole must have cut through it.

it was a burgundy Breezer Uptown (commuter-style) bike.
this will limit me to commuting with my road bike. which means i will most likely die. so if the thief is ever caught, he/she can at least be charged with manslaughter. and that makes me feel just a tiny bit better.

cable locks are easily cut. I wouldn't recommend them... especially if you are someone who tends to leave your bike locked in the same place often, or for extended time.

Sorry about your loss... we'll keep an eye out for it!

Thanks. I don't have the internets at home and am just seeing this.

I reported the bike stolen right after it happened to the UK police. I contacted the officer after I read that the bike had been spotted, but never heard back.
Since the bike is being spotted in areas outside of campus, I guess I need to report to the Lex police. Is that what you all would do?
What should my next course of action be?

I can't thank you all enough for your help.
Free popsicles for everyone when I get the bike back.

I'm assuming you had your bike registered with a UK sticker on it, right? If so, that means you would have needed to fill out the UK form with your bike's manufacturer serial number on it. If you don't have that on you, I'd suggest you get it from UK's registration office and keep it with you at all times.

Without that number, the police won't be able to do much in the event that they actually find the bike. I've seen it play out before... cops won't do much of anything without that serial number and confirmation of it by the owner, and more importantly, if you haven't reported it stolen - but in this case, you have reported it with UK, which should be enough.

that said though, it might be a good idea to go ahead and file a report with Lexington police and let them know that you had filed a previous report with UK. Anything that will save them time and effort will help you.

Yes, I did register it with UK, so my serial number is out there. I need to get a copy of it. I'll do that. Then call the Lex police.

Thanks for your help.

just got word from tim buck that there was an eleven year old girl riding this bike in front of a house on the corner of mlk and sixth. if you go out of town on mlk. the house is on the right corner when it dead ends on sixth. there was a group on sizable dudes at the house and tim was with his fam so he opted to not confront them about it.
