I came across a bicycle generator product called Pedal-A-Watt (http://www.econvergence.net/electroacc.htm) and thought it would be fun to make one myself which was cheaper, better quality and/or more efficient.

Has anybody done something like this before or know where I might be able to find the various components?

Thanks very much for the post.

I was actually hoping for something a little less "first-principals" and also something specifically bike oriented. For example, I was looking to get a recommendation on a high quality stationary bike stand which would also lend itself well to being integrated with a recommended generator.
