After leaving lexington for some time I was really pleased to see the new bike lanes in town with this last repaving, but a lane is still just a mark on the road. The problem is not just having space for cyclists, but rather the way they are treated by vehicles. How many times a day do you see folks use them as turning lanes, parking lanes or extra space to pull out in order to look ahead at traffic? As it is the only occasion anyone has to bone up on bike rules of the road is when you are yourself a cyclist. Drivers are not given any real mandate to ever learn their responsibilities. It seems to me that for relatively little money you could print up road signs giving a few distilled and succinct rules of thumb that are for drivers to see in reference to how to treat cyclist. Maybe even a question or two on the amazingly short written test and an expanded section in the drivers manual. (there may be, I haven't taken it in some time)
