It's that time again, and once more Lexington's home polo courts at Coolavin Park will be hosting the Bluegrass State Games Hardcourt Bike Polo Tournament on Saturday, July 24th. This will be a quick n' dirty, one-day, double-elimination tournament and games will start up at noon.

Like last year, this tournament is open to teams from Kentucky and/or states that border Kentucky. Last year we had 17 teams participate.

Registration is $30 per team / $10 per player if you pre-register, and if you wait until the day of the tournament, the fee goes up to $45 per team / $15 per player... So, it makes sense to go ahead a pay in advance.

Even though i'm using all my time off for Norteamericanos this weekend, i will find a way to make this. Expect one team from Bloomington and i'll pay Chris or whomever in person at Madison.

Any guess on what time this will finish?

Please follow the link at the top of this page, and please try to pre-register because it will save you $5 per player.

I can answer any questions you might have about how to pre-register.

Please keep in mind that this is more of a Bluegrass State Games event, than something we're doing on our own, so I had to really talk them down to keep the pre-registration fee at $10 / player, $30 / team. I wish the day-of fee wasn't so high, but I can't really do anything about that.

Hello everyone! Just wanted to remind everyone who plans on playing on a team in the Bluegrass State Games tournament to PLEASE try to pre-register if you possibly can. Pre-registration ends this Wednesday night, July 21st at midnight, and we HIGHLY ENCOURAGE those of you who have a team together, or even 2/3 of a team... designate a person to act as your team captain, and use a credit card to register. This will save each player $5 and $15 total for your team. Follow the ...link below to pre-register - you only need the name and info for your captain, not each player (if you're still sorting that out):

Go to this page and click the "Register Online" link to the right of Hardcourt Bike Polo. This will take you to the online registration form.

The way registration for team sports are handled through the BGSG requires one person from each team to be the designated "Coach" or "Captain" and that person will be the one responsible for registering their 3 man team. So, essentially one person will be registering and paying a total of $30, but that registration and fee will be covering all three people on your team.

Please note: THERE WILL BE NO OPTION FOR INDIVIDUAL REGISTRATION SO PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A TEAM LINED UP BEFORE YOU REGISTER. Sorry folks, but this is the way we have to do it in order for this to work, since we are going through the BGSG to handle our registration.

You can still form teams and register your team the day-of the event, but it will cost your team $45 instead of $30... so save yourself some money and go ahead and do it now before it closes.

Last minute stuffs:

The tournament starts at NOON on Saturday. Please make sure your team is at the courts beforehand so we can get your team on the brackets, and so you can be here for the pre-game debriefing (rules and such). If some emergency happens and you are going to be late, or not here at all, please call me ASAP to let me know (I'll list my number below)... but please respect the event - no one wants to wait around for people who can't be on time for no good reason. The weather looks good for Saturday, but please keep in mind that it is supposed to be brutally HOT (mid-90's), so make sure you are prepared to be out in the sun and heat for most of the day. We will have water, drinks, food and some tents for shade, but feel free to bring anything else to make yourself comfortable.

A few self-imposed rules:

- Helmets are MANDATORY for tournament play. Make sure you bring one.
- NO GLASS CONTAINERS WILL BE ALLOWED INSIDE THE COURTS. NO EXCEPTIONS. You'll be asked to take it out of the court area if you don't abide by this.
- Be discrete with your alcohol. An official from the Bluegrass State Games will be present all day as a medic, and there may be Parks Officials stopping by, so keep your drinks on the down-low. We'll have plastic cups for you to use.

There will be pick-up games Friday night for those who will be in town, or just want to come out to play. We'll fit some pick-up into the day on Saturday during slow periods, and there will also be regular polo on Sunday.

On Saturday after the tournament, there will be an afterparty with karaoke at The Sidecar (next to Al's Bar on the corner of 6th and Limestone, just blocks from the courts). Many of you already know this place. People will start gathering there shortly after the tournament, and karaoke will start up around 10pm. Please fell free to embarrass yourself.

LEXINGTON PEEPS:
We can use volunteers to help out for various things during the day. We'll need time-keepers, score-keepers, goal judges, water-fetchers, food-handlers, etc. If you're not going to play, but want to help out please come out... we can certainly use you. If you have spare tents, chairs, coolers, water, food, etc. it will all be of tremendous help.

Just wanted to take a minute to catch my breath and say a few thank you's here a few days out from the conclusion of the 2nd Bluegrass State Games Bike Polo Tournament...

I went into this one with a little trepidation because I knew I was going to be super busy with Cricket Press during this time of year, which explains why I was a bit slow at getting the word out and promoting this tournament. Goes to show how much I can count on all the folks in our little community here to help pull together a really fun event.

Big thanks go out to Logan and Henry, for helping me with the infrastructure of the tournament; Logan keeps a keen eye on the running of the games and makes sure everything is going smoothly from the center of the courts. Henry helps tremendously with the organizing and flow of the brackets. Andy Stith and Jakub were instrumental in providing food this year - Jakub was enthusiastic and on the spot with extra food and water. Andy provided the bulk of the food that we grilled up. Big thanks to both Drews (Combs & McGraw) for being the "grill team". Many people brought tents, and various forms of shelter to provide shade on a hot, sunny day. Also thanks to each and every player who volunteered between games to serve as either goal judge, time-keeper, or score-keeper. That sort of help is essential in running a tournament.

Last, but not least, thanks to all those from other cities who took the time to come to Lexington and enjoy a full day of friendly polo competition with us. Lexington is an amazing place, and we have an amazing community. I am forever indebted to everyone who helps make our little city such a great place to live and ride a bike in!
