I only need the rear wheel, but I would consider buying a wheel-set as well. It needs to be a 700c rim with a flip-flop hub because I am going to run a freewheel as well as a fixed cog.

I figured one of you folks may have upgraded and found yourself with an extra wheel. Thanks.

I appreciate the offer, but I was looking for a second-hand wheel.

This forum seems to have been designed as a tool to assist Lexington riders in sharing resources (parts, labor, and knowledge) within the local cycling community. In order to retain the sanctity of this communal project, I feel that it should be separated from the cycling businesses. We all know and respect the local shops, but I don’t feel that this forum is an appropriate platform for advertisements.

On that note, when asking for stuff in the community it is tough to ask for a well sought after commodity (very popular these days) and seek it for free or cheap. So I my offer to you is I have a junker rear wheel that was dished over to the side to become a fixie wheel. It is not flip flop, it is not a deep v, it is nothing great but it is a free (price) wheel that will get you up and running on a fixie.
I rode this wheel for well over a year and it worked great.

Ease up fellas. I understand what you guys are getting at, but no one is making any advertisements here; blurring the line between commerce and community.

if bigjb had some reason to believe that the person in need was in the frankfort area, there's nothing wrong with saying "check to see what Troy has at his shop". Perhaps the phone number was a bit heavy-handed, but...

Many of the forum members here are employees at local bike shops, and all of them are supportive, active participants in the area bike scene. We've yet to have anyone cross the line that you guys are alluding to. It would be something altogether different if a bike shop owner came on here just to announce that they were having a big sale on wheelsets or something... but one of us non-shop-employees saying "why don't you try so-and-so's shop" isn't crossing any lines. Hell, I'm guilty of doing that very thing, and I make no apologies for encouraging people to frequent their local shops. I think they are important to the community as a whole (aside from just being a business), so the more we support them, the better.

believe me, if or when that line gets crossed, we'll deal with it.

brian's right, besides, you're asking for the most in-demand part there is for a fixed gear bike. a 700 flip flop is not something you're gonna find in a goodwill. maybe if you were asking for some cheap pedals, or a handlebar, or a derailler, somebody might have in their parts box. i give away shit like this all the time, but not what you're asking for.

you could definitely redish an old freewheel road hub [like tim's] and could probably get this cheap or free. but no one's gonna jump out of their pants to give you a good deal on this. it will probably be better to just buy a formula wheel from one of the shops or an online source.

warning: these wheels are machine built and will therefore need tensioning and trueing, especially after the first 100 miles of so. if you don't know how to do this, it might be better to purchase them from a shop who could probably do it for you

p.s. it can also be aggravating when someone you don't know makes their first post asking for a handout, and a nice one at that. then they make their second post criticizing someone else. just sayin

I really didn't mean to open that whole can of worms.

Sorry if I was unclear, I was planning on purchasing the wheel for its legitimate value. (I know all of you are very kind, but I would never expect you to hand me a free wheel.) I am the kind of person who tries to reduce my natural resource consumption by purchasing used and/or local products whenever I can.

I wasn’t really expecting tons of people to reply with extra wheels because I know they are a hot commodity right now. I thought I would give the forum a try just in case someone recently bought a high end wheel to replace an average grade one and was looking to sell their original wheel.

I agree with brokebike that no one has crossed lines, I just felt like the comment recommending CCC was not in good taste because it came up so early in the discussion. I completely understand recommending a shop if the person is looking for a rare item or unique service and you know that a particular shop would be the best place to go. A rear flip-flop wheel is hardly rare or unique, and every shop is going to have one. If it looked like there weren’t many responses after the post had been up for a few days, I would gladly take shop recommendations then. I just felt like the first comment jumped the gun, and I got hotheaded about it. My apologies to bigjb and all of you who have found yourselves caught in this messy discussion.

I appreciate the offers for a re-dished wheel, but I will probably run it as a fixed gear sometimes and I like the peace of mind that comes from a reverse-thread lockring. So I guess I’m off to one of the local shops… thanks everybody.

no harm done. nothing wrong with asking... and nothing wrong with trying to re-use and reduce.

not to beat the issue of buying from shops into the ground, but I just want to add that buying from our local bike shops is buying local. It's not like buying from Wal-Mart or Dick's (or any huge chain that hurts local business). I know that Scheller's has several locations regionally, but they're still "local" if you ask me.

Also, I am pretty sure CCC is trying to corner the niche fixed gear market, and has several offerings or vendors that are more fix gear specific. Plus, it is a new shop and very supportive of the alleycat community. Thats what I have heard through the grapevine anyway.

No, I have never been to CCC nor do I even know a single person from Frankfort. I know if you go to pedalpower though, they only stock one flipflop laced rim. Or at least they did when I was trying to price rims and realized my broke ass couldn't handle a brand new fixie build after my geared bike purchase this year.

I wanna say they were mavic, but I could have been confusing that with the rims they had hanging next to them, it was several months back. I was just surprised that with as big as the alleycat community is here that they didnt even offer to build a nicer set up for more money (id think what shops charge for labor would make it plenty worth the time).

One day when I actually have a real job, if I ever make it out of school, I hope to get some deep v's in gold laced up to a coaster brake hub to match my old as earth black and gold concord. DEM LUGZ ARRR PURRRTY[/url]
