This fall, Philadelphia's skateboarders, bicyclists and inline skaters will have to either pocket their cell phones or use hands-free devices, making the city the first in the nation to extend the measure to include non-motorists. While that might be a grind for some of the city's wheeled residents, others are cheering the move.

Walking along the crowded sidewalks of downtown Philadelphia, you can't miss these daredevils weaving in and out of traffic, maneuvering aggressively through construction zones and dodging pedestrians while talking on hand-held cell phones.

I was a little concerned until I learned that the city had recently banned cell use by car drivers too (i'm pretty sure, at least). the reporter doesn't mention that, which shows something, i don't know what. Interesting though.

Sure I've talked on the phone while driving & biking, but i'd give up that right if it guaranteed that the sorority girl passing me w/ 6 inch margin wasn't texting too. silly to make an issue of bikers though, as if a biker bites it on his cell, the biker gets hurt (maybe a ped, but prob not). On the other hand, If some doof hits a biker with his car while talking on the phone the biker still gets hurt. Seems like the latter is more of a danger to public safety.

oh, and including skateboards is stupid.

Also, hands free isn't banned. wtf?

As long as they don't ban texting while unicycling. Then I'd be mad.

I didn't really tell anybody that I am from Philly yet, but let the record show that I had nothing to do with this.

Let it also show that I've never seen a single rider talking on a mobile phone out there. Rediculous.
