Quote: | The planning team also realized that the campus will have a huge impact on redevelopment of the surrounding area, which includes the YMCA, Lexmark and Coolivan Park. |
Not sure what this actually means for the future of the park, but surely it will remain as a park, since the Legacy Trail will be running right beside Coolavin, and it is a prime greenspace area for the Northside. I'm not trying to make any dire predictions, or raise any alarms... but keep your ear to the ground for anything you come across that might suggest how this BCTC redevelopment may affect Coolavin and the surrounding area. Everything I have read so far seems to suggest possible (and inevitable) future development of the areas surrounding Coolavin, and not Coolavin itself. But given the track record of Lexington, I think it helps to be on guard and ahead of the information curve about issues regarding development and redevelopment.
Perhaps bike polo needs to step up its profile and get more folks out twice a week (or more) just to reinforce the fact that the park is being used and appreciated by members of the community. I would hate to see it viewed as "expendable" just because it is a low-profile city park. _________________ ------------[] O |

Mostly just said that they were interested in providing more access to the park to make it more visible, and were interested in developing more slow traffic accessibility (bikes, ped, etc) with the trail going through. Also seemed to want to partner with local organizations to develop synergies between local orgs and the campus like the YMCA. |

Not Coolaven related, but did they mention what they're going to do about the tens of thousands of graves scattered around the eastern state campus when they try to build new buildings? |

I think they already reburied the uncovered graves in the northwest corner by the ymca. I dont think there were really that many there.
The Archeological survey did sonar tests or something and found no other graves on the property, though they will need to test areas that are paved currently when they are torn up.. |

They're there. Mostly in unmarked graves in one cemetery lot.
The place had a 10% annual mortality rate from the time it opened to WWII-ish. Plus there were lots of victims of the cholera epidemic buried on the grounds. Best estimate from former employees I've talked to is in the neighborhood of 20,000. |

will 20,000 corpses fit inside CentrePit? We could have a permanent setting for Thriller every year... _________________ ------------[] O |

The cemetary is being preserved, any other graves are thought to have been recovered, unless they are under pavement currently. Those are being moved to the cemetary area.
This sounds like a puppet program of Harold Tate and Newberry though, so who knows. |

I've long suspected that the number of graves, or at least the fear of having to deal with unexpected graves, is why the property has been passed around between the city/state/uk/bctcs/etc with nothing being done for so long. |
