...sand down a old frame and hook it up with some new paint..mildliy professionally as ive got sandpaper and an airbrush:)...
any ideas??
its an elgin frame that i am slowly workin on refitting and i would love to see it bright n shiny

easiest would be to take it and get it sandblasted down to the bare metal. You're probably looking at $30 or so... but that's just my guess. Powdercoat or paint will run you at least around $100. Depending on what color you want to paint it, you could leave the old paint on, and use it as your primer coat... just rough it up a bit with some sandpaper, and paint right over it.

Another option that really sucks and is messy and hazardous is using a spray-on paint stripper... but even then you'd need to spend a good deal of time with scraping and sanding residual paint off.

I know because I've tried all of this stuff... best method is to just get it all blasted off... start from scratch. And the easiest is to just paint on top of what's there.

i always use aircraft paint remover found at auto zone to remove the paint off my frames. but beware...if that shit gets on your skin it will burn like hell!

let it sit for 10 to 20 minutes then just rinse off the paint. you will probably have to do it a couple of times but it works great

my first post ever!

I've sandblasted my frame, primed and painted it before and it's a pretty painless endeavour. What might be tricky is finding a sandblasting booth in Lexington.
I imagine if UK has a metal shop you could probably go in yourself and ask to use it, and if they have shop tecs they might give you a demo. Or maybe even a garage? Not sure if this is really going anywhere in terms of a suggestion... Anyways, if you can manage to find one that you can use, sandblasting is a snitch.

Prior to blasting make sure you tape off your frame-get some super adhesive tape (it's neon green usually) and be sure to partially stuff the tubes with paper towels so then the sandblasting grains won't stay in the frame and possibly hurt your bottom bracket in the future.


After you have a sandblasted frame, have some acetone around to rub down the frame so the raw metal stays clean-touching it with you bare hands could cause it to oxidize. Spray a primer coat, then color of your choice and then a clear coat. I would suggest getting 2 cans of clear coat just in case.
