I just happened to catch the Channel 18 lunch time news thingy, and they had a couple of people on there promoting the St. Patty's Day parade (the lady from Failte, and some other older guy).

Get this though, when the news anchors asked if there were floats in the parade, the guy said something like this:

"Actually, if people are going to go through the trouble to make a float, we recommend they take that money that they would use and donate it to a charity... and just ride in the parade in a pickup truck instead"

Wow. That's some forward thinking right there. No wonder our parades tend to suck.

They pretty much allude to that in the parade sign-up information. It seems self-limiting on the surface, but they seem to want to keep the parade grass roots and accessible, rather than all fancy and corporate.

It would make more sense if other lex parades had lots of big floats and this was a more community oriented alternative. Could also be that they don't want to deal with the safety inspections and insurance requirements for big floats.

understood and agreed, but I think what got me was the implied invitation for more vehicles and less creativity. Obviously, to have a big "float" in the traditional sense, you would need it to be powered or towed by a vehicle somehow... but my point was that I wish more emphasis was placed on people-powered parade entries, a more objective view towards what might constitute a "parade float" and overall more variety and participation from the public.
