anything that goes in there will have a hard way to go because until the other properties are developed, it will still be the only real draw along that strip. _________________ ------------[] O |

what are you talking about!?!? there's turner's machine shop, and an evil tow truck company, and a gravel quarry...and...that weird business that painted the church neon yellow...and
nobody else hangs out and drinks bourbon at dogtown on the weekends? (except for chris i mean)
I think it's awesome that the webbs insistance that they demolish everything RIGHT AWAY so they could get started building, has turned into: "well, we're just gonna hang out for a while and let you look at the nice hole in your downtown, we don't really need to start building or anything. oh yeah, and we're gonna block off the sidewalks indefinitely too, because nobody walks on them things (because i've never gotten my fat ass out of my car and walked anywhere except from my suburban mcmansion to my car and from my car to a building i'm about to totally eff-up means that no one else ever walks anywhere too...right?) I mean who walks downtown, anyway. REALLY (imagine woodford web talking like Alicia Silverstone in Clueless)."
I call it a nice Kick In The Rear to go along with the nice Kick In The Crotch we received this summer.
I'm worn out, taking a nap now. _________________ How about, "Can you NOT rip a giant hole in our downtown and erect a big goddamn penis full of crappy chain businesses?"

yes, service-oriented businesses were meant to be excluded from my previous statement. _________________ ------------[] O |

The neon yellow church would make a great bar.
Speaking of Centrepit, I liked how in the same week they released a study saying the condos would be 50% rented by the time construction started, and another statement that they were just waiting for paperwork to clear and would begin construction any day now. |

the economy sure put the brakes on the great condo craze of downtown lexington, didn't it? It'll be interesting to see how all of those developments are faring when 2010 rolls around. _________________ ------------[] O |

This is slightly off-topic. My apologies in advance.
I'm not terribly happy with The Dame's new location either but I do think there is potential there. It's not the ideal situation for us by any means. After looking for five months, however, it was the only spot that was really feasible for us to move into.
I'm just looking for some input here.....what do you guys not like about the new location? Any thoughts on what we can do to improve it? |

I have only been to the new location twice but here are some of my petty gripes (maybe not so petty)
- Stock the bar, both times I have been to the new place and many times at the old place the bar would be damn near empty and you had hardly any beer. I know times get tough and distributors have problems but when you are a bar, this should be priority number 1.
- I do not enjoy the "multi club" aspect of the new location. I don't like walking into the entrance and being asked where "I am going/want to go". I know there is the separate entrance now.
- The "front room" needs something to fill the space besides the big huge ass projection sports screen. It makes the Dame feel real empty when this room is so empty.
- Shows, I mean no disrespect to any of the bands who are scheduled to play but it is unfortunate that you now have this much bigger space but you are not really bringing anyone in to the area. The bigger names that you do bring are almost "regulars."
- The dame does not feel genuine or a part of the community anymore. Maybe this is the multiplex of it or maybe it is just not surrounded by other places I care to visit, or maybe the fact it is right next to some crappy new development but it is not inviting anymore and the general feel makes me not want to go there.
So again, these are my feelings and I mean no disrespect but this is what I see and how I feel about the new space. |

I think most people understand that. You all took the best option at the time, out of a poor set of available locations.
As for what people don't like about the place...the history and reputation of A1A/etc is a lot to overcome. |

other than the businesses that surround it sucking now, whereas they didn't when they were busters, mia's, and (gasp) the melodeon-- I like Dame just the same, maybe more since I can stay in the same building and go sing Kareoke/slash get away from the loud music for a little break. _________________ Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle |

All good points. Here are my thoughts...
-I agree that having a fully stocked bar is essential. The problem at the old location was simply that we often would run out of money and couldn't order enough alcohol to last us through the week. That sucked. In the new location, Main Street Live is in charge of ordering and paying for the alcohol. They've hit some rough spots here and there but I think they're doing a pretty good job keeping us stocked these days. One thing that I really don't like, though, is that they don't have room at all of the bars for the beer and spirits selection that I used to have at the old location. I'm still trying to figure out a way to get some more variety in there.
-If you go to The Dame's doors, you won't be asked where you're going. The door guy, most likely Ken or Danny, will simply ask for your ID and tell you the cover price. You don't have to step foot in Main Street Live unless you want to get something to eat or sing karaoke.
-I agree that the front room is large and isn't really utilized well during concerts. I'd love to put in some games or pool tables, but we need the space when it becomes the dance club, so that isn't an option. I've also thought about having monthly art exhibits in that space.
-It takes a while to book shows. I only had two weeks notice before we opened in October, so the first few months were mainly locals and whatever national acts I could get at the last minute. Starting this month and going forward, I feel that we're starting to get some of the acts that The Dame should be getting: JJ Grey & Mofro, Doodle Bug of Digable Planets, Lucero, Wanda Jackson, Charlie Louvin, Lotus, Drive-By Truckers, Neil Hamburger, Junior Boys, Dexter Romweber of the Flat Duo Jets, The Hookers, Perpetual Groove, Pat Green and Reverend Horton Heat. We need more variety, though, and I'm doing my best to make that happen.
-I can sympathize with your last statement. This is only our fifth month in the new spot though, and we were at the old location for over five years. I hope that in time, we'll be able to make the new spot feel like home again. Like I said, I'm open to ideas....
If anyone has any ideas about the gallery, please let me know. My email address is dameonmain@yahoo.com. |

I'll be honest, even when the Dame was at it's old location, I never considered myself a "regular" by any stretch. I loved the building and the location and I thought the staff did a good job of running the place. I loved that fact that The Dame was what it was, and I never asked much more than that.
However, I never really cared to just walk in and have a drink and hang out because I didn't think the atmosphere was very inviting for that. When it was empty, it felt REALLY empty and I always felt like there weren't many spots to comfortably sit and have a beer and talk with friends. That's why I mostly hung out next door at Busters. The bars I frequent are those that give me the feeling that I can hang out and relax there.
I went to the Dame for the shows I wanted to see. When bands that I wouldn't normally get to see came to town I would go check them out at the Dame and feel proud that those bands had a place to play in Lexington. Most of those shows were always pretty crowded and fun, and I was never one to check out a lot of those regional bands that seemed to always be passing through every other month or so... mostly because those types of bands seem to play a particular genre of music that I don't really care for. Also, I'm not big on Americana, alt-country, Bluegrass legends, blasts from the past, cover bands, or recreating a particular moment in time. I pretty much just want to see the bands that I'm either interested in now, or ones that I have a pretty good feeling about.
I know all that I have just said only references the past-tense Dame, and although I am ashamed to admit it, I have yet to set foot in the new Dame location, but a lot of what I mentioned above is the reason for just that - there really hasn't been a band there yet that I really wanted to go see (besides maybe Mates of State, and I couldn't attend that one). I'm still hoping that one day soon I'll get a chance to head down there and check it out because I really want to... I just haven't found that "push" yet. _________________ ------------[] O |

could you charge the cover at the doors which actually go into the music venue, so that people who don't particularly want to see the bands playing could still hang out in the front room of the dame without having to pay cover? I've been to MSL several times now and not entered the Dame until dance party/free time, but by that point I've already bought all the drinks I'm going to be having for the evening. I'd rather be buying them from the people I know and love _________________ Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle |

Do you know if they have any experience running a bar and/or music venue? It'd be a shame for it to open and then close again in 6 months. |
Both are attorneys, no bar experience. |

I would assume they at least took and passed the Bar if they're practicing attorneys.
