Does anyone here know if anyone in the city keeps statistics on the number of cyclists hit by vehicles in Lexington? Is the data detailed enough to provide information like location of the accident, type of bike, type of rider etc?

when I was working for Kenzie in the bike/ped planning a couple of summers ago, one of the things I did was map (or record from a previous map, I don't remember) the points at which bike/ped accidents happened in Lexington. so yes, the city definitely has this information. sometimes the data was a bit screwy, with the police messing up the location of the accident because they parked their car far from the actual accident (in a lot, say) and the GPS unit recorded it in the wrong place.

I wouldn't know how to go about getting this data, but it definitely exists. maybe inquire with Kenzie about it, if you're interested.

Generally these statistics come from two sources to be comprehensive. Police accident reports are the first, but hospital emergency room reports are another. Many accidents are not police matters so the hospital data is very important a more complete picture.

All police reports are public records, so the County Clerk should have them on file somewhere.
