Ok. So i have a fixed specific carbon rear wheel that is spaced for 130mm.
But, my frame has a rear spacing of 120mm.
Can i change my rear wheel to 120mm to make it work? _________________ The sound of a car door opening in front of you is similar to the sound of a gun being cocked. ~Amy Webster |

depends, but probably not. if it's a cup n cone hub then you might be able to remove some spacers between the locknuts, but probably not.
you could however, stretch your chainstays to the width of the hub, depending on the material of the chainstay and the amount of difference.
i've had a 130 hub in a 126 frame, no prob
but you probably don't want to fuck with all that, so you should just give it to me. |

I was thinking about just stretching it to fit. I mean with a steel frame I'd assume I could probably move the chainstays 5mm on each side and make it work. But then again, I wasn't sure because 5mm might be a little much. _________________ The sound of a car door opening in front of you is similar to the sound of a gun being cocked. ~Amy Webster |

yeah, 126mm frame to 130mm hub is definitely no problem. I've even gone 130mm frame to 135mm hub and it worked alright.
Not sure about a difference of 10mm, though... it might be a stretch, no pun intended.
Have you asked around on BikeForums, or the FixedGearGallery forums? Especially with the FGG forums, there's lots of old-school dudes on there who could probably give you some advice... _________________ ------------[] O |

As another poster said, the easiest thing would be to remove spacers on both sides of the axle (if there are any to remove). If you have a steel frame spreading the rear dropouts is no problem but you'll need to make sure the dropouts are in alignment after you spread them. Park makes a tool to check this. |

You will be much better off spreading the rear - and don't buy a tool to check the alignment, just tie a piece of string from one dropout, around the front downtube (steerer) and back to the other dropout. It doesn't matter if the string slides around up front, as long as it's still for the next step.
You can literally hold a ruler across the seat downtube (be level-ish) and see to it that it's the same distance to the string on each side.
Harris cyclery (.com) has a nice depthy explanation on how to do this. |
