ok... so we're getting to where we have enough folks and enough bikes for people to play, but now we're facing a shortage of mallets. Seriously.

Seems like one is breaking every game, and I now have an actual pile of heads, both new and salvaged, that just need poles to put them on so that we can make some new mallets.

I wish the damn things weren't so hard to come by in Lexington, because every time I see a new one break, I'm like, "shit... how the hell are we going to find another to replace it?". I know it's unavoidable and shit happens, and I don't want it to get to the point where we ask those who break a mallet to be responsible for replacing it, but I think it's time we make a more concerted effort to start turning over every stone possible to try to get more mallets for all of us to play with...

hopefully we can get those ski poles asap, but i'm worried that they will be used up as quickly as we've of lately been breaking mallets. we should be on the look out for golf clubs instead. matts club is ultra light and those things are a hundred times stronger than ski poles.

Have you tried the used sporting goods store on Richmond Rd next to Walmart? I don't know about ski poles, but they've got a crap-ton of golf clubs for cheap.

speaking from making about 80% of the mallets we use... including 2 golf club mallets, making them from golf clubs is a real pain in the ass as opposed to aluminum poles. They are hard as shit to drill accurately through - even with a drill press.

Chris and I went to that used sporting goods store on richmond road, they were rude as hell. Its specifically baseball and golf but they wont sell just the golf club shaft...assholes. It would be cheaper just to go to goodwill for an old set of golf clubs.

I believe I'm through with making golf club mallets... after burning through two expensive bits, two bolts, and dulling the threads on my good #10-24 tap to make ONE mallet, I don't think I'll offer to build these types of mallets for people anymore.

That steel shit is just too damn hard to cut through.

Golf clubs can make nice mallets (although I think they have a little too much "spring" in them), but I'd say you're on your own if you want to build one up.

As anyone tried freecycle or cheapcycle in Lexington? I have had a lot of success over the last few years with both. Granted this was before Craigslist came along but it might be worth a shot.

Just saw this on Perfect north's site. It is a long ways away but might bring in a few poles on the last day of the sale/swap
ANNUAL SALE AND SWAP WEEKEND

Three day event: October 31, November 1, November 2. Purchase new gear and passes for the upcoming 08-09 season. Used equipment swap area operated by ski patrol.
