Lexington's First-ever 2008 Bike Prom!

DJ Mick has opened up the request line. $2 beers and a Bike Prom Bomb mixed drink at the afterparty. Prizes for best dressed male and female and first to finish male and female. Map posted at end of thread.

Dress up and Dance your bike around downtown Lexington during the 2008 Bike Prom. Ride stag or bring a date. No prior prom experience required, just bring your bike, share your fun-loving attitude, and promenade your style in the city.

What will you do on your special night? You will ride to selected destinations with a provided map and stamp your dance card at each location. You will asked to perform prom activities at each dance stop, such as be fitted with a supplied corsage, primp your hair, partake and properly toast from the magic punch bowl (adult and child versions provided), select just the right tune, take a whirl on the dance floor, and have your photograph made with a backdrop of stardust and rocket ships.

While prom activities will be easy and fun to complete, you might find a few bike-related challenges that will spice up your night. All destinations and activities will be provided on the map and dance card.

Prizes and Afterparty. In the euphoria of the evening, maybe you'll get lucky and the win the coveted crown of the Prom King or Queen. As you grace us with your cosmic moves on the dance floor, remember style is more significant than speed. Prizes for best-dressed couple and best-dressed male and female. We reserve the right to offer mystery prizes too. Prizes will be awarded during the afterparty at Molly Brooke's Irish Bar with drink specials and DJ music by local mix-meister Mick Jeffries.

Start Time and Place. The prom starts at the Living Arts & Science Center, 362 N. Martin Luther King Blvd., Lexington, Ky. Registration begins at 6:00 PM and the dance starts at 6:30 PM. Rain date is the following Saturday, September 13. The event is $5.00 and all proceeds benefit the Living Arts & Science Center. The event is open to the public.

Ya, we saw that, but the time from UK's website is TBA and it's Norfolk St. The following weekend is also here with the time TBA against Middle TN...so it's six in one hand, half dozen in the other.

I'm not sure how the timing of the game might impact the race, but here's some flagrant speculation. If the game is early, well perhaps there'll be more obstacles on the dance floor. Let's throw out stereotypes here and call them jocks who sneaked in hip flasks of everclear, which are by then emptied. If the game is during the race, well then the dance floor is quite possibly vacant, as pigskin denizens have suckled up to the boobtube. If the game is after the race, then shitfire we'll have a prom king & queen to strut their eminence in a city waxing blue.

the crappy games are usually at 1 or 4 in the afternoon, that way they dont have to pay for lights if they arent going to be on TV, and dont have to rent cops for the entire day. There will be plenty of people downtown, it ought to be fun, and maybe key in a few more people to bike events in lexington.

So here is my question. How come I only here about this kind of cool stuff when it has already been planned? How can you find out about this kind of stuff beforehand so you can be more active in helping get it done. Or are you just born cool enough to be in the loop?

i'm not involved in the planning for this event, but i would suggest that you just got to plan it yourself.

sometimes it's just way more efficient to plan something like this - especially when time is of the essence - when you have an idea and a couple of friends who you know you can count on to help you pull it off.

I don't think it's about being "in the loop" or anything like that... just that people go about doing things differently when they want to see something get done.

Last year after racing a few races I inquired to find out what it takes to get involved or host a race and basically learned all it required was stepping forward to doing it.

If you keep an eye on the forum you may notice that often when a race announcement is posted there is a call for checkpoint workers. Races (ideas, planning and organizing) however are the product of an individual or small group of folks stepping forward and putting in the effort to make Lexington a fun place to live.

Just as a reminder for anyone who didn't go to prom, there will be an awesome alleycat in Louisville the same night, and every able body from Lexington should attend.
