These ideas were stolen from a discussion that some Portland players were having about bike polo-specific line markings. I think these make pretty good sense for the most part, and since we're painting our own court, we can implement our own lines to suit us. These are their ideas, but we can use them to reference as we plan our own markings:


The white lines are assuming that there are existing tennis court markings. Keep in mind that most cities play on courts that are much smaller than ours, so these don't pertain to us. I do like how the diagonals point directly to the goal, giving you a good reference point for shooting.


A variation of the first one, with shallower diagonals, and possibly four tap-out areas (although I don't like that idea).


This one will aid in beating the all-time high score.

Nice evening painting the court. I understand diagonals might be handy, especially for those who can't carry a ball too far down court: me.

Whatever detail gets painted on court, maybe a stencil can be made from projecting the design onto kraft paper, drawing it, cutting it out, and taping (with much delicacy) into place. Of course it can always be freehanded.

I kinda like this idea Drew came up with, which was to have sets of markings for both the long court game, and also for two short courts, should we ever want the option to play two games at once, or just a short game every now and then.



The only problems I can see with it are; in order for it to not look all wonky, you pretty much need to make the diamond shapes symmetrical, which makes for a wider angle on the long game, and narrower angles on the short game - but this really doesn't matter technically, because they are only for reference, and any given player's angle at which they would approach the goal for a shot would always vary... as long as the diagonals point to the center of the goal, I think that's all that really matters.

The other thing is, regardless of what lines are painted, in the event that we would be playing two games simultaneously, you're always going to have more buffer space on the "outside" sides of the courts as opposed to the "inside" sides... because the two courts butt up against each other. Would this offset of the short game goals throw people off? Would it even matter?

I like the last idea alot, but would it help if we had a line down the middle long ways. In order to give half court markings in the short games but also a middle reference for the long game.

although i do like the look of the other designs, especially the one posted by roller, i just thought perhaps we could apply the same idea of goal reference lines to the short game, especially if we are going to be competitive with teams from other cities, as no one else plays on a court as humungoid as ours. if we are going to start playing short court, which i think is a great idea, we also need to develop some sort of barrier to put between the courts, so keep that in mind and your ideas coming.
if there are any other ideas about line designs, please throw them out there. i've got a few, but no graphic designing program so i may just have to attempt to explain them to brain and he can translate. thanks for the great input everyone and thanks for your help today in getting audra's bicycle back to its rightful owner.

I can only guess. Heartland? Someone would probably try to steal one of those things, I wonder what they would plan on doing with it.

what about retratcable tennis nets, sort of like the orange plastic fence idea. I think they used to have those sort of nets at woodland park, before the skate park when we used to make our own funboxes and shit and put it on the tennis court, oh wait, that might have been a volley ball court. Nevermind.

i think painting the court so that we can play two games at once is crucial. tedder and i are going to talk with parks and rec about getting some old tennis court net winches and maybe a net so we can have a collapsible barrier that is still tight enough at the bottom to deflect any loose balls. my dad suggested building a scoreboard too, but he has down's syndrome. also, hitching tim's post onto this one, we should definitely tack on some community develop services now that we have incurred the hatred of some its denizens
