a pedestrian alleycat. I love it. its like parkour.

we'd have to put the checkpoints close enough that cheating by car wouldn't give you an advantage, or make people crap out halfway through. going from pedal the planet to scheller's harrodsburg would be far for a bike alleycat, which would make it even worse if you had to run it. It would also be more inclusive to let them use the closed off streets downtown.

I think adding a 5K makes great political sense. Most grant funding sources view bike/ped issues as the same, and here in marlboro/dural country, there's a strong emphasis on improving one's health.

Trail building in general does not distinguish between bike/ped use, so it's a good occasion to align the various users in town and demand more trails....e.g., get that Town Branch Trail built. I like to think of Bike Lex as less cult of bike and more of a HumanPoweredTransport Lex...or more succinctly: get your ass out of a car lex.

Anybody remember Urban Challenge? Our neighborhood sponsored the first one in 2004 and it was tons of work, but people loved it. It was essentially an alleycat without bikes, in fact you couldn't use bikes, which I thought was stupid. One checkpoint required that you photograph yourself with the mayor, which you had to find.

As a runner and bike lover, I like the idea of a 5K. But how about changing that up a little, and make it an Ekiden styled running race? It's more of a 5-6 person relay, and each leg is a different length. There aren't too many in the states, but this style of race is very popular in Japan. The runners carry and pass a sash (think beauty pageant) instead of a baton. It's unique enough to go along with Bike Lexington and also to bring in runners and spectators. It would work great on closed downtown streets. Could be cool.

Also, I like the idea of putting all the activities on the same weekend as the Horsey, but I wouldn't want to have to choose between events to participate in and/or watch. I like riding the Horsey on Saturday, but wouldn't want to miss out on fun stuff happening downtown.

Just some thoughts/ideas from a long time reader/first time poster!

So as planning and feedback has evolved over the last few days the proposal to the police dept will close down a large chunk of downtown from roughly 7 a.m.- till at least midnight. Various events will go on during the day and then races will happen towards the late afternoon and into the night. This will give folks an opportunity to ride the HH and also come down and spectate the races.

Let's keep coming up with ideas for things that we want to see happen that weekend and figure out how to make them happen.

Sorry to keep professing my envy for what Pittsburgh's got going on these days, but they're getting ready to kick off their annual BikeFest, and it looks like they have a packed calendar of crazy-ass bike events that we could probably look to for some inspiration and ideas for Bike Lexington '09. Check it out!
