Anyone looking for a map of the immense network of singletrack in lex:

pdf: http://www.outragegis.com/maps/VeteransParkMap.pdf

Am I missing other locations? The fact that we can't bike away from cars or in the woods in this city is shocking. One small reason why we're bigfoot.

It's pathetic that Veteran's Park is all we have, but it's still possible to ride for 45 minutes without repeating yourself too much. If you live close by, it's worth it. There's also a loop that isn't on the map, plus you can ride all the way to Brannon Crossing through an old grown-over farm.

Yeah, this place sucks for mountain biking. BUT there's a lot of interest in developing V.P. as a mountain biking park, and also seeking out new land to build trails. You can get info on an upcoming local meeting by going to KYMBA.org. The state IMBA rep is a landscape architect and trailbuilder. There's also some local govt money for trail development.

now, if they'll just make it so that when cyclists have to bike all the way out to the edge of the county lines to do mtn biking or trail riding, they can do so on roads that are more conducive for bikes...

There is also Capitol View Park in Frankfort, an extensive and rather difficult network at Greenbo Lake SRP (2 hours east), at Carter Caves (rather small but difficult), Cave Run, and some in southern Kentucky along Pine Mountain (Little Shepherd Trail) and Cumberland Mountain. But... they are pretty far away past Frankfort...

Exactly. Fighting traffic from downtown to just ride a couple miles of trail at Veteran's Park is an aggravating prospect. South of New Circle folks have an easier time and possibly know better roads to land in the park. But optimally I'd like to roll off my stoop and straight into a green space and not worry about autos. Ah...country life in the city...

seicer, nice trail areas you mention, but as you note, they're a bit of a haul from Lexington.

The I-5 Colonnade Park in Seattle is a great example of urban renewal for the use of cycling. A swath of land underneath a highway overpass was converted into a network of singletrack trails.

Here's another article on it from Cranked Magazine:

Nice. Tight-n-twisty trail and looks pretty technical. I think some riders are putting similar challenges in Louisville's Cherokee Park, but nowhere on this scale.

you could roll down chinoe make your way over to armstrong mill, make a right, or left depending on which route you take to get to armstrong mill into the rich neighborhood on that road that takes you to hartland kroger, make a right on hartland parkway there at the corner of the shopping center and that brings you to tates creek road, shoot straight across and you'll be headed toward veteran's park. Chinoe will get you past new circle without having to deal with on and off ramps.

good route suggestion.

When we were starting talks with Parks & Rec about our bike polo project at Coolavin, the people there told me that Veteran's Park has long been in the sights for many cycling advocates on that end of town to become Lexington's "premiere cycling park" (as relayed to me verbatim), with its network of trails and paths. Still, I think regardless of whether or not it ends up being what it could be, either there or at any other Lexington park in the future, the city needs to really ramp up it's bike-friendliness and connectivity of bike-ways if it wants to encourage others to use the facilities.

it definitely sucks to feel like you have to load your bike in your vehicle to take it somewhere and ride. I know I have to sometimes in certain situations, but I always feel like a jerk for doing it!

A couple things I have heard about but I am not in the mountain bike loop so maybe folks know more about it on here.

The other day at a meeting Brad Oakley said IMBA/KY folks were a little apprehensive about doing a lot of work to Verteran's Park because a par 3 golf course was going to be developed there. I heard the golf project got started but then the company behind it folded. Does anyone know anymore about this? Plus it was suck if it was true since they just shut down the par 3 course on Broadway/Harrodsburg Rd.

Another thing I heard is there is some land off Parkers Mill across from the Cardinal Baseball Park that is going to be developed into MTN trails.

Again, these are just side conversations I heard so hopefully someone on here knows more about these.

I meant to go to the Lexington KYMBA meeting a week or two ago but I forgot about it. I have heard of rumors to create some real mtb trails in Lexington and I don't think they were talking about work to Veterans. I don't see Veterans as having much more potential than what currently exists out there. It's better than nothing but it's not really a place for a 2-3 hour mtb ride, it is ideal for riding a cross bike out to, doing a few laps and then riding home however.
