| Would the time between the 4th of July Parade and the start of the Fireworks be a good time for a downtown Alleycat? |
| Oh, yeah! We'll be there anyway, that's kind of a dead time, and tons of people downtown make it even more fun. |

Gwenda and I want to run a movie-themed "Summer Blockbuster" Alleycat that combines a point to point race with side games and maybe costumes a lá the Halloween, Valentines, and Who Dunnit races.
Probably simple, clue driven check points at least tenuously related to summer movies, side games like movie trivia that you could participate in or not depending on what kind of race you want to have, and costumes of characters from blockbuster films. So that's three, Three, THREE races in one!
We were looking for a good date, and are thinking about the Fourth of July, between the parade and the fireworks. What do y'all think?

| It seems like between 4:30 and 5:00 downtown evacuates and is a total ghost town until closer to the fireworks. 6 or 7 might be a good time. What do others think? |

Could be fun though there are lots of extra people in town that day - many from outlying areas that are not likely to be use to sharing the road with bikes. There is also a hell of a lot of drunk drivers wheeling about the city. If it were to happen it would need to wrap up well before fireworks because it turns into a madhouse of drunken gridlock downtown.

yes... well before the fireworks start, and well after they are over, the streets are clogged with many, many drunk assholes who are trying to just get back home and are wondering why they are sitting in so much traffic. Most of them aren't familiar with Lexington or downtown for that matter (which explains why they try to drive and park as close as possible to the fireworks).
An easy way to get pissed off at the public-at-large, and get harassed by drunken idiots is to ride your bike right through the thick of it... unless of course, you get off on stuff like that. |

So is Tim right that there's a window, though? The fireworks don't start until almost 10:00 pm, and the parade will probably be over before 4:00 pm.
Keeping everything north of Short Street would solve some of this, maybe.
Anyway, keep talking. It would be nice to see a consensus yay or nay develop--we can always move it to the next night, after all.

yeah, Tim's right. A bunch of us have been amassing in and around Phoenix Park each 4th of July for probably the past 5 or 6 years. We might have had the biggest bike crowd that year right before they decided to cut all the trees down. But we still show up with a good number of folks, and we all bring lots of snacks and of course, "refreshments of the liquid sort".
You get maybe an hour or two after the parade ends and everyone packs up and heads either home to recharge from too much sun and drinking, or they simply head somewhere else to continue the party. The city immediately deploys the street sweepers, which seem to be the final "floats" in the parade... they don't fuck around with picking up, and the streets remain closed for a little while, but downtown is pretty much deserted until the crowds for the fireworks start showing up. |

True. True.
It sounds like a fun themed alleycat that i personally would like to work a checkpoint and dress-up for. I just don't see folks having the energy for it after a day of drinking and parading. At least not on the same level as a Roscoe alleycat.
Roscoe has definitely set a bar.

as someone who has witnessed someone on a bike get struck by a drunken driver, I can safely say I'm not in this camp. |

Yeah, we've come around to Brian's view on this one. Especially given the timing of this news article and accompanying photo--I've had nightmares that go like that.
We'll figure out another date in July, possibly even the 5th. Thanks for the input, everybody!
