from everything that I am hearing, both from organizers and those who are planning to seriously participate in the Euclid time trials, I would assume now that it is looking like fixed gears, single-speeds and other non-time trial bikes will NOT be permitted to race on Friday night.

I could be wrong, but apparently, this is going to be a pretty serious deal - not that anyone who would bring out their fixed gear to race wouldn't be taken seriously, or seriously compete - but I'm guessing that with the amount of racers that they say are coming in from all over to take part in this 3-Day Stage Race deal, I'm doubtful of how open they will be to just anyone showing up to race their bikes on Friday.

Instead, there is the opportunity for those who want to come out to race to take part in the races the next day, after the 10 mile Bike Lexington ride. More info on that is posted here:

there is no reason they shouldnt, having a fixed gear doesnt hinder anybody elses chances as its individual, nobody else is around you.

its been my experience that a great deal of people will sign up right before preregistration closes, and even more will wait until day of due to weather. at least thats how the kyiana spring series went. there were still usually 200 riders in crappy weather for those races and they happened back in the march and early april when the weather was much cooler.

I have no idea how it is all going to go down Friday night... this is just the impression I've been getting from the people involved with the organization of it (I have nothing to do with it - just trying to get answers). I'm no racer, and I don't know the rules and regulations of whatever the governing bodies are. Those of you who might be more connected with the folks putting this together, feel free to ask the same questions and find out for sure... and if you find out anything, please post it here.

I get the impression that it's not so much about what types of riders and what types of bikes will be permitted to race (I admit that was bad choice of words on my part in my earlier post), but I do know that the racing folks putting this on have a lot of high expectations for this race series, and the turnout... so, what I meant to say was, I'm not sure if they will be allowing just anyone who shows up on a bike - without pre-registering, and paying the hefty race fees - to participate. It might not be as relaxed as we'd hope it would be.

When some of the people putting on these races contacted several of us, asking if there would be much interest in what they considered us "fixed gear / single speed riders" (seems to be an easy way for the rest of the cycling community to categorize non-traditional cyclists) we said "sure!", but then when we found out how high the registration fees were going to be, we told them that we doubted many would want to pay that. $30+ is a long way from a $5 alleycat.

They still want to attempt to include everyone as much as possible, so that is why they are making concessions by having the special category races on Saturday with a reduced fee.

Friday, May 16, the portion of Euclid Avenue/Avenue of Champions between East High Street and South Limestone will be closing to accommodate bicycle time trials, as part of the citywide bike events comprising Bike Lexington. The street closings will begin at 5 p.m.

At 5 p.m., the section of Euclid Avenue/Avenue of Champions between South Limestone and Rose Street will be closed to traffic and pedestrian crossings. At 6 p.m., the portion of Euclid Avenue/Avenue of Champions between Rose and East High will be closed to traffic and pedestrian crossings. The races begin at 7 p.m., and the street is expected to re-open at 9:30 p.m.

Those students and employees parked on the south side of Euclid Avenue/Avenue of Champions, in the Student Center parking lots, will be accommodated on an individual basis to exit the lots. Between qualifying races, police will permit drivers to exit the small and large Student Center parking lots and cross the street, driving onto either Martin Luther King Boulevard or Lexington Avenue.

Additionally, police will be on hand to escort pedestrians across the street as needed. Please allow plenty of time, as escorted crossings will only take place between qualifying races.

i dont think im gonna use any aero gear. its only 2 miles, so i figure im gonna not be tucked in for too long and cranking outta the drops for more leverage.

Anyone else having trouble pre-regging for the event? Or does anyone here have a direct link to the page for registration? The one I'm using keeps coming up with an SQL error.

And Chad, lemme know if that aero helmet is up for grabs, I'll be sporting my fixie in the 4/5's and will use whatever help I can get after not biking the past 6 weeks... Sad
