a few interesting bike-related things I found while browsing some of the 3rd District Council candidates websites... for those of us who live around downtown and UK's campus, just something to keep in mind come election time.

Eric Thomason
From Eric's site, on bike and pedestrian friendliness:
Quote:
"With increased infill and redevelopment, real estate formerly devoted to parking is transformed into housing, retail, office, or other uses. Furthermore, as gas prices continue to rise it is imperative that we make cycling and walking the preferred mode of transportation downtown and throughout the 3rd District. Increased budget allocations devoted to converting existing, auto-focused, infrastructure into a streetscape that is friendly to the pedestrian and cyclist will make this goal a reality. It is also important for the city’s leadership to market biking and walking as viable alternatives to car centered transportation and facilitate this shift in mindset."

(note - Eric is also one of the founders of Preserve Lexington)

While Diane doesn't actually address bike and pedestrian issues directly like Eric does on his site, you gotta give her props for featuring a two of our alley cat regulars, Josh & Tiffany on her home page.

Thanks brokebike,
I am a very strong advocate for a bike and pedestrian friendly Lexington. That was on my web site and I will have to go back and see where it went. It is also on my printed materials.
I was a founding member of Yellow Bikes Lexington. I would also like to see YB have a "creat a commuter" arm to it as it gets further down the road, so to speak. It would give people the opportunity to donate bikes they no longer use and people can then learn to fix them up and have a bike of their own.
It has worked extremely well in other communities, put more people on bikes, and cuts down on bike thefts.
Transportation is a big problem in Lexington and is a growing problem with gas prices and more awareness of the environment.
Christopher is a YB hero!
