Welcome, Tiller. Good luck in your program at BCTC and be careful commuting if you're a new cyclist.

welcome to lex tiller!

some do's and dont's:

-dont ride on the sidewalk, unless there is absolutely no other way (quick trips down one ways- still technically illegal)
-do support the local bars and restaurants downtown and elsewhere
-behave like a car on the road when you can, law says stay to the right hand side 5 feet of the lane.
-get used to rednecks and frat boys screaming at you

there are a few older threads here that have more info about bike laws, events etc, check them out too, and again, welcome to lexington

tiller,
i always suggest keeping a full water bottle in your messenger bag. For hydration of course but more importantly for the frat boy who screams "asshole" at you but doesnt realize you can pull up beside his window at the next stop sign and hose him down as you say "share the road"...with a smile on your face of course!

-ride bikes, there are beautiful farm areas around town. use lexrides.com and bgcycling.net
-party it up around campus, especially state, university and waller streets off south limestone.
-coffeeshops - common grounds on high street, third street stuff, coffea island next to campus, coffee times (never been there though so i dont know where it is)
-keeneland for like 2 more weeks
-http://www.lexarts.org/ for anything artsy
-lexgo.com for some events
-check with the uksab (uk student activities board) http://www.uky.edu/SAB/

or get a fake.
busters is pretty chill with lots of pool tables and darts, and the dame always has something going on.
mc carthys is fratier crowd, but can be fun when its not retardedly packed. redmons and mainstreet live are incredibly fratty, if thats your thing. bluegrass tavern is a nicer bourbon bar with alot of redmons spillover. lynaghs is a regulars bar with the best burgers around and is generally a pretty cool place,
the fish tank is usually a really mixed crowd, but a lot of fun with cheap drinks.
pazzos and marikkas have great beer (and pazzos has great food).
two keys is fratty and loud, and the paddock is really hit or miss.
harveys is generally an older more professional crowd,
havnt been to hugos and molly malones looks cool, but they wanted two forms when i tried to go, and i just had my liscense and cash with me

and of course al's is cool, and very supportive of the cycling scene here in lex.
