Inspired by http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=405709 , and conversations I've had with more than one of you all...

Do you think it would be possible for someone to have a viable business, or worthwhile part-time job even, delivering food on a bike as an independent contractor servicing multiple restaurants in the downtown/campus area?

Pros and cons:
-People are lazy, they'd like food brought to them.
-People are cheap, they'd balk at paying extra for delivery when some places do it for free.
-All the work would be from 11am to 1pm, then 5:30 to 7.
-At least one similar car-based delivery service failed here in the past.
-It'd be easy to get dispatched by text message. (omg! smmichez!)
-Tax deductible tight pants and bike parts.

Note: No way in hell am I considering doing this.

oh, and maybe delivering for nicer restaurants would work? a la lucies or natashas? i have no experience at all with this idea though haha

i still think your best bet would be jimmy johns or pita pit though.

It could work I think if you started to get some good word of mouth on campus. Especially with "freaky fast" delivery places Rolling Eyes taking an hour, if your service is faster than the stores I think there'd be a market for it.

That wasn't me, just reminded me of things I'd talked to people about before.
I still don't think it'd work here.

Several years back there was CafeExpress which did deliveries for a variety of places that did not have their own drivers. Though the concept seems logical I am not sure that they lasted too long though. They were the typical car delivery not bikes.

That's the one I was thinking of. Couldn't remember the name. I don't think they lasted six months.

Their business model was more complicated than it needed to be. As I understood it they reprinted menus from the places they delivered for with marked up prices, you'd call your order in to them and they'd relay it to the restaurant, then pick up and deliver.

If a similar service was going to work, I think they'd have to contract with several restaurants to be on-call for deliveries and charge a flat fee to the customer.
