|
|
UK is so focused on making money from parking/parking tickets, that they also will not give you your paper diploma if you have any outstanding tickets as well!
WHAT A GREAT IDEA!
Ripon College, a small liberal-arts school in Wisconsin, is offering
to give incoming freshmen a free bike (a Badger State-made Trek, of
course) IF they promise not to bring a car to campus for an entire
year. The primary impetus--driven by school president David Joyce,
who's an avid cyclist--is to help cure the problem of too many cars
and too few parking spaces on the tiny campus. But just think of all
the other positive repercussions this could have! Let's hope it
catches on at other schools.

I wonder about those who park at the stadium: where do they live? Are they within biking distance? It'd be nice to have a survey done.
But then I walk along Limestone every day, and see people with K-lot permits parking along the street so they can be closer to some of the north campus buildings. Talk about incredible lazyness. _________________ Sherman Cahal | Cincy Rides |

along that vein, it seems like someone could open a pretty profitable pedicab business just busing kids back and forth from north and south campus to K lot. |

that would be sweet, sounds sort of like the wildcat wheels program. the only problem is that they are so underfunded you can only check out a bike long term once. the demand is there, the money isnt. |

I would have to disagree about the funding for Wildcat Wheels. I believe they have plenty of funding but are lacking volunteer and people power. Additionally, the initial idea was to lend bikes on a short term basis and then it evolved into a few semester long check outs. The reason you can only check out a semester long bike once is because folks were taking advantage of the program and basically getting a free personal bike for one, two, three, and four semesters.
I know Shane et al are working on more solutions like a "build a bike" program and such. I encourage everyone to volunteer at Wildcat Wheels and help get more bikes on the street. If you don't have time or forget to volunteer then donate all your old parts that you have sitting in your house, garage, basement, etc. |

it's called "Wildcat Wheels bicycle library" for a reason. You check one out, you return it. |

right, i guess i was thinking it was more along the lines of just trying to get people to ride, but it makes more sense to set it up the way it is now. |

it makes sense to post stuff when you know about that which you are posting. |

but if you owned the pedicab and were charging for the ride you wouldn't need to rely on tips. $5 for a 15 minute ride carrying 2 passengers? Cheap for them and pays alright for you if you have the free time. |

sorry, i had just assumed when they said they didnt have enough bikes for lots of semester long checkouts it was because they didnt have the budget for that many bikes. blind assumption, my fault. |

it's cool... I'm just saying that when it comes to bike-related programs, events and organizations in town, it's best to keep in mind that many of the people who are directly responsible or have some close ties to much of that are also people who use this forum everyday... so unless you are confident in what you say about those things, whether it is assumed or matter-of-fact, it might be best to hold back a bit... or at least ask those people about it, and get the info first-hand. |
