I just netflixed the Graham Obree movie, which got me to thinking about cycling movies in general ("fiction," not documentary or race). We all know the big ones: Breaking Away, American Fliers, Les Triplettes de Belleville, Peewee's Big Adventure, etc.
I have one recommendation to add to the list. One of the HD channels on our satellite provider is nothing but foreign language cinema and I happened to catch a really good Brazilian film last night called O Caminho das Nuvens (The Middle of the World). It's about a family of seven taking a 2000 mile trip across Brazil on four bikes in search of work. Netflix has it and the description there says it's based on a true story.
What other dramatic/comedic cycling movies are there? _________________ http://www.lexingtonbikeracecalendar.com |

Not sure how comprehensive this is, but here's a pretty good list:

and, the other film you mentioned is on there too! |

I recently bought B.I.K.E. which is about a guy in NYC who is trying to get into Black Label and it just shows all sorts of crazy stuff about the Black Label culture up in NYC and a little bit from other cities as well. It's a helluva interesting movie. I let my girlfriend borrow it so I won't have it back until middle of Nov. but if after that anyone wants to borrow it, holler.

Trish rented Worriers a couple of nights ago, no bikes though. They just re-released Flash Gordon as well. _________________ Albert Einstein trembled when he found out time was water. Seeping through the rafters to put out this burning world. |

Some good friends of ours live near the home base of the Pedal People collective in Northampton, Mass. One of the many cool things they do is that they have a lending library for members set up in one of their houses, right next to one of the bike trails there. If there were enough people interested, maybe we could set up some kind of central depository of cycling related books and DVDs donated or lent to the group. I mean, I don't really know how many more times I'm likely to watch the 2003 Paris-Roubaix, but I've got that DVD taking up space... _________________ http://www.lexingtonbikeracecalendar.com |

B.I.K.E. would be a good one for a bike-in movie at Dogtown, if they decide to have more.
Not a movie at all, but The Immortal Class by Travis Hugh Culley is by far my favorite bike-related book. As much for the urban planning chapters as the bike stuff. It'd make a good movie, except it'd get all Hollywood'd, end up looking like this, and I'd cry...

Tim, Grant and I got the chance to do the Chicago Critical Mass a couple of summers ago, and Travis Culley was there, as always, front and center... I remember he was wearing these strange cover-alls that kinda looked like those athletic pants that you can just rip off quickly (velcro up the legs and all that)...
So, as we neared the end of the Mass ride, some guy blows past us totally naked... totally. Sure enough, it was Travis... I guess that explained the cover-alls. |

ah yes, Quicksilver...
where fixed gear bikes magically change to singlespeeds and back to fixed gear again... all in one race!
also... where shifting to an easier gear actually makes you go faster.
you pretty much summed up all of the best parts of that movie, with the exception of the uber-cheesy romantic bike-ballet scene in his apartment. Because we all know the ladies dig cyclists who rock the homeless-guy handlebars. |

I looked for the artistic bike-dance clip but couldn't find it.
Also, in that scene his gear ratio magically jumps to 1:1. |

Another non-movie: 1995 sitcom Double Rush starred David Arquette, Robert Pastorelli, DL Hughley and Adam Goldburg as bike messengers. It lasted all of 11 episodes. The opening credits are worth watching, directed by Spike Jonze.

i've never heard of this show before - must have been on cable - but the opening alone made me throw up a little in my mouth
however this clip illustrates a few key points:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oss_LRQVTG8
1] this show was made in the 90's when mountain biking was still cool. [wikipedia says the late 90's, which means the producers of the show were about 5 years too late]
2] all policemen and criminals in santa monica ride spynergy[tm] wheels, because they make you go fast. and they are cool
3] also, spynergy[tm] wheels are very good for trials [hopping on shit] because they are so bombproof. carbon fiber is bombproof. bombproof is a word from the 90's
4] spynergy[tm] in NO WAY paid for or contributed to the making of this show
5] tv is crap because this show went on for 5 seasons.
6] i feel the strange desire to buy some spynergy[tm] wheels and hop on shit |

the only appropriate way to dismount a car while on a bike is a 180. |
