Here's my idea for a March 2v2 tournament, thought I would post it up here before putting it up on the league.
Let me know what you think?

Also, I found this awesome picture of Mike

I've heard word that the 2011 Tweed Ride may be on that Saturday, the 12th.

Not 100% sure on that, though.

Yes, the tweed ride and St Pat's parade are the 12th.

As I understand it the timing will be the same as last year, parade at 1PM, ride to follow shortly after.

looks like Kyle already posted it on the League forums...

Kyle, let me know if you need anything in terms of polo money or use of the temporary boards. All of the court supplies are at my house. I've already committed myself to helping organize the Tweed Ride with the folks who are putting that on, so if these are in fact going to fall on the same day, I can't say that I will personally be around to help out.

Also, keep in mind that by putting it out on the League site, it could be a rather large turnout... and we'll definitely hear about it from Rudy if anyone passes by the courts that day and it is apparent that we're having a big "official-looking event" there. It's happened before when Rudy showed up at Chris' April tournament... I got a good talking-down to by Rudy for that. So, we basically need to find a balance of getting word out, but being discrete both before and during the event.

sorry Brian I did not know that. So what about those days where we are cooking out and there just happens to be 30 players and 20+ spectators? It looks like an "event" but its not. Just like you and I where talking about the other day the first really nice day is going to be CRAZY! (in a good way)

Also how do we go about holding "events" at the courts? I am thinking some small fund raising stuff this spring/summer.

well, here's the way it has been put to me, by Rudy:

Weekly polo play is fine, and it really doesn't matter how many people are there playing. The number of folks playing, or spectating at any given time is really beyond our control. It's fine if we cook out, fine if we drink beer, etc.

The point at which it becomes something more than just weekly pickup is when we start actively promoting an event and opening it up to other cities to travel here, with registration fees, multi-days, tents, tournament brackets, bullhorns, speakers, etc. When you can drive by the courts and it looks like there is an organized event going on, basically. I know that's a fine line that is sometimes hard to define... but when Rudy showed up for the April Invite last year, he knew something was going on that was beyond just regular weekly play.

All I'm saying is that we should try to be discrete when we have little events like this, and try not to attract too much attention to the courts. We have to be careful not to let anything get too out of hand, or be too obvious. Parks is weird because when they hear the word "tournament", it means something entirely different and formalized than what it may mean to the rest of the polo-verse. They see liabilities, increased potential for injury, potential for park damage, and most importantly, potential for them to make some small amount of $$$ from it with standard Parks permits for "events".

I don't want to sound like the downer all the time, but it's just that whenever anything catches the eye of Parks, I'm the one who gets the call and has to explain.

Also, for big "official" polo tournaments that even come close to what we put on for the Midwests, I would advise that we should always try to go through the legwork of planning properly and going through the right channels to make sure everything goes smoothly.

This would include at a minimum:

- plan for the scope of the tournament; participants, money, food, format, etc.
- talking to Parks to make sure they know about it, often they will help us.
- liability insurance.

For smaller things, we just have to play it smart and try to fly under the radar.

Also, did everyone see this (must be logged in to view):

Your not being a downer at all Brian I think is great to talk about. Anything that keeps us on good terms with Parks and the city we should really go out of our way to do.

Speakers and tents are like flags saying hey we are organized over herr! The extra boards/running 4 courts might be hard to get away with.

I was talking about small fund raisers and bake sales and stuff to help with gas for those who want to travel this season. If anyone is even into it.?

My thoughts on this 2vs2 split-court setup, would be to split only one of the courts into two smaller courts, and leave the other half open for all-day pickup both days. Might be less obvious that way, plus it would allow people to get their fill of some regular, full court pickup whenever they wanted.

Also, we may not have enough boards to even split both courts in half. Remember, we would need two sets of boards running down the middle for each of the two halves, to account for the supports that go on the backside of each.

Gah, I don't exactly know my spring break plans, especially when I'm supposed to leave. I am going to Colorado for a rock climbing trip, but if we don't leave until Saturday night, I'll definitely come out and play pick up if I have a working polo bike.

A post on the League site

"hey are stacking up. right now the count for sure is 7, could be more. shit i'd sleep in somebody's yard if it came to that. we would all be grateful for any housing made available, i can cook, and will for my host, as long as i am not too drunk, which could happen.

edit: and we can bring a selection of good Michigan small batch beer."
