This seems like a good place to ask a question about cars...

We got a new car (I'm 1990 weeks old and this is the first ever new auto I've had), a Honda Fit, to replace the two kind of junkie ones we've been making trade off shifts as we held 'em together with spit and baling twine. We're turning one back into the leasing agent (Mother-in-Law's Extra Cars of Anneville, KY, I highly recommend them) and I want to give the Jimmy to a charity, taking me back down to de facto carlessness--on a day-to-day basis anyway, as Gwenda works in Frankfort.

So, are there any local places that typically take auto donations that are worth a look? It's eleven years old, has a quarter of a million miles on it, and has been banged to death on the back by Yellow Bikes, but it's probably at least worth something to a scrap yard. Any ideas on who I could give it to?

Hey, thanks for the reminder, Charlene. The Car Talk guys are always talking about that.

When I dug through the service they use, it turns out that it's some kind of big clearing house operation that you can use to donate a car and have the proceeds (presumably after these guys take operating costs or something) to pretty much _any_ charity. So now I'm thinking of using that service and directing any proceeds to Yellow Bikes. Smile

Hmmm. There's a pretty suspicious number of these places, actually. Now I'm trying to find some numbers that compare what percentage of sales proceeds from each company actually winds up with the charities.

Why is even giving stuff away so complicated?
