A little bird tweeted within earshot of me today, saying the local police are likely to start enforcing some of the local bike ordinance requirements. More specifically this one:

(a) Every bicycle when in use at nighttime shall be equipped with a lamp on the front which shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least five hundred (500) feet to the front and with a red reflector on the rear of a type which shall be visible from all distances from fifty (50) feet to three hundred (300) feet to the rear when directly in front of a lawful upper beams of head lamps on a motor vehicle. A lamp emitting a red light visible from a distance of five hundred (500) feet to the rear maybe used in addition to the red reflector.

My guess is it will probably start gradually, with warnings and the like, but to save you the hassle; I'd recommend lighting up.

The ordinance is funny in that it requires a front light, and I feel the rear light is much more important, but we must also realize these ordinances are 40 years old, and are in the painstakingly slow process of government review.

Did the bird say if the enforcement would include stopping people for riding against traffic and/or the wrong way in bike lanes?

I always thought should be something that in enforced. However, I have always thought of it as an education opportunity for the popo and the rider. An opportunity to give riders the ordinances and a blinking light.

Tim, that is the way that I understand what is going to happen, as I'm sure your aware. LFUCG is currently sourcing lights that will be issued with a warning. Part of the LAB city rating is based on enforcement of bike ordinances, I think this sort of thing will help keep cyclists safe and legitimize bikes on the roads to motorists.
