I don't know about directories but you could check out David Herlihy's evolutino of the bicycle, I think they have it at the engineering library. I may not have the title exactly right. It's full of pictures, there is also a book that is solely a history of deraileurs, it's pretty impressive with tons of pictures also, its called The Dancing Chain
