Anyone heading up for this ride? I'm going to try to make it, and if anyone wants to carpool, I can stash two bikes on the rack and a few inside.
'Hike and Bike' event set for Memorial Day
It's part of healthy hometown program
By Sheldon S. Shafer, Courier-Journal, May 8, 2008
The seventh "Hike and Bike," a 15-mile trek from Waterfront Park through several western Louisville neighborhoods and back, will be held on Memorial Day, May 26, Mayor Jerry Abramson said yesterday.
The biking events have been held each of the past three years on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.
They are part of the Mayor's "Healthy Hometown Movement," a program intended to encourage residents to make active and healthful lifestyle choices.
"Louisville has made great progress in becoming a bike-friendly community, and our Hike and Bike events have become a great way for families to exercise and have fun together," Abramson said, noting that more than 4,000 people took part in the Hike and Bike event last Labor Day.
Subway restaurants again will be the primary sponsor of both events this year.
The Memorial Day event will begin with a "health fair" and other activities at Waterfront Park from 9 to 10 a.m. and from noon to 2 p.m.
From the riverfront the route will go through downtown west to Portland, then along tree-lined Northwestern and Southwestern parkways, though Shawnee Park and back to Waterfront Park.
The complete bike route is about 15 miles, with numerous turnoffs available to shorten the trip for both cyclists and walkers.
The cycling route will be marked with signs and include several break stations staffed by volunteers to assist with directions and water.
The Louisville Bicycle Club is providing volunteers to help cyclists along the route who encounter equipment problems. Louisville police will assist with traffic at key intersections, and the Louisville Metro EMS bicycle team will monitor the event.
Abramson said live music is being added to this year's event, compliments of Mom's Rockschool. Four bands with participants ages 8 to 18 will perform at Waterfront Park after the bike outing.
The health fair will offer free nutritional snacks, children's activities and health information at several booths, both before and after the event.
A limited number of free T-shirts will be given away, and the Brain Injury Association will give away 350 bike helmets to riders who don't have one.
Jazzercise instructors will help get participants going by leading warmup and stretching exercises before the event. _________________ Sherman Cahal | Cincy Rides |
