After putting on Winter tires, I decided to look for shortcuts on my commute. There were a few that helped me avoid traffic. I posted them on this map.
Please share your favorite shortcuts. Feel free to modify the map. |

One of my favorites when going to and from downtown is to cut through Woodland Park around the pool to Old Park and down Central Ave to Old Vine, then Rose... pretty much traffic free.
Also, many folks I know use this route, but if I need to get to Southland Drive area from Chevy Chase, I cut back behind the UK baseball stadium, through the athletics area and through Commonwealth parking lot. From there I pass Greg Page apartments behind Central Baptist and the cut-through over to Rosemont Garden. _________________ ------------[] O |

David and Brian,
from a recent Alley Cat I discovered a short cut that can get you from Gardenside to Red Mile Road.
From anywhere in Gardenside, take the Lane Allen Bike Lane to Beacon Hill.
Beacon Hill across Mason Headley to its end at Summerville Dr. and take the right and around to the entrance to Addison Park. At Addison Park take the path bearing left and follow the SUP around to the grounds of the Fayette County Buildings and Safety City at Red Mile Place and onto the Red Mile Rd. Bike Lanes.
Another rider told me she cuts through the Red Mile grounds to emerge on S. Broadway near Angliana Ave. From there is is only a short hop to the Scott Street links to UK and etc.
P.S. Since I was a child I have been using the "Lafayette Cut Through" tho you are trespassing over an apparently accommodating land owner at the end of Bob O' Link. Simply cross the creek (Vaughn's Run, I believe) and bear right across the yard. The resident's house is to the left. Proceed to the corner and take the "cut through" to Springhill Dr. behind Lafayette HS. There you are at the point where you mention when carrying your bike across the creek. I have always intended to get the Lafayette cut through resident a nice fruit basket or something. We owe people like that a great deal of courtesy.
See you on the short cuts...
Mike

While they're not as stealthy as Dave's, I added a few practical shortcuts that I routinely use. _________________ ------------[] O |

I took this route today and it was a really nice ride. It is fun to find new spots in town that you bike past all the time. Favorite part was riding around the track at red mile... then the three little parks were nice hidden spaces. |

The Bob-o-Link shortcut brings you to Jacana Drive. Riding towards Waller, you'll meet two intersections, though traffic along Jacana does not stop. At the end of the street, there's a gap in the fence separating Jacana from a business complex's parking lot. A white van is almost always parked in front of the gap, perhaps so that customers won't park there and potentially sue over damage from a bike.
When I go downtown/to campus, I ride along Waller Avenue and take a left at Crescent Avenue. The street dead ends, but like Jacana, there's a fence with gap in it (a very big gap, this time). From there, you have a couple of options, but I always ride the Journal-to-Press-to-Transcript Avenue route that takes me to Virginia Avenue, where I cross over to Winnie St, which leads to Prall St, which brings you to central campus. I know a lot of people use this, but that route is gold.
Also, there's an informal footpath from Goodrich Avenue that leads to Southland Drive. It pops out behind the drive-in dry cleaners that was formerly the Webb (not associated with Webb bros) Dry Cleaners. Helpful shortcut from the LWPG neighborhood. |
