That bike has been up there for months. not moved

I'm surprised it took this long. I've seen that bike outside of cheapside for months and the chain has been completely rusted for a long time.

went by today and the wheel, handlebar & stem, brake lever are all gone too. it's been there, complete, for months. either the guy that got the wheel came back for more, or he started the feeding frenzy

I've seen a lot of lock fails this week...including a bike secured with a 1/8" steel cable, with a U lock through the loops at the end but not touching the frame and another bike with only the quick release front wheel chained to a rack.

And this today on MLK: (wish I had gotten a picture)

I'm getting the impression that a lot of the bike thefts recently have been the result of people leaving their bikes unattended in open garages, backyard sheds and carports. You know, the kind where the front is always open so people who are lurking around can see everything of value that you may have in there?

I think some people have this false sense of security that because they have a nice home, or live in a relatively crime-free area that simply stashing their bike in the back where it is out of plain sight will keep it safe. Perhaps just the fact that a shed or other detached structure provides some degree of shelter, so therefore it must also give some security as well.

Even if they are locked up, the best option is always to bring those bikes inside somewhere safe so people do not have access to them. Even if I was living in a cramped apartment with three roommates and had to walk up a flight of stairs... you better believe I would still find a way to bring my bike(s) inside.

does anybody know who makes those keyed quick releases? i'm not referring to 10-5mm ones, but the ones with individually coded locks. they make seatpost bolts too.

I bet you'd be more forgiving if his tires and bar tape were also red, to match the cable, lock, frame and seat.

Don’t give up. Sometimes it takes quite a while for a stolen bicycle to surface. Be patient and tenacious in your searching, and you just might be rewarded as my 14-year-old daughter was. It took her two years, but she kept looking, and one day got her bicycle back by asking for it from the boy she saw riding it.
