i have a chain ring for a new polo tank i am building that is 36 tooth.
what would be a good freewheel for run with that. i like to ride i little stiff. any help?

18 tooth or 20 tooth would be good. usually 2:1 or a little less is good. i've got an 18, so if you want to buy a 20 tooth, i'll trade you as I'd like to run a little lighter.

Go with the 20t. It will be great for polo and still pretty decent for riding around town.

so.. 44:16 on a 700 is too high? or um.. stiff? <looks disappointed>

yes, yes it is.

i believe most of us are running mid 30s up front by around 20 in the back.

if you're wanting to play polo, then that's a stiff gear. If you're just riding around town on a single speed or fixed, then 44x16 is fine for that.
