Hey everyone! If we're going to pull off our first real polo tournament hosting for the Bluegrass State Games, it's going to take a concerted effort, with people stepping up to volunteer to help in whatever ways they can. I'm already feeling like I've bitten off more than I can handle with this as it is, especially since the whole issue with putting up the boards is proving to be daunting.

I'm going to need help with a few things concerning the tourney, so if you think you may be willing to help out with any of these following items, please speak up. It would be much appreciated. Keep in mind that none of these should keep you from being able to participate in playing. From my past polo tournament experience, things seem to move along loose enough that once the games are going, it kind of runs itself.

- sound system and someone in charge of tunes

- someone to act as a general announcer (calling each team up to play, etc.)

- scorekeepers for each game (can be done in shifts)

- someone who knows how a double-elimination bracket works (IMPORTANT!), and a few people to help make sure the brackets are correctly progressing throughout the tournament

- extra lawn chairs, coolers and blankets for spectators

As you know brian im all in with anything i can do i have a grill, big cooler, and some lawn chairs i will bring. Sound system=bullhorn, that has worked best at the tournaments iv been to, no music you have to talk to your team mates. Players=goal judges, i will be one as much as i can.

i can provide a PA system, but I don't have any stands on which to put the speakers. I've also got a rudimentary understanding of tournaments, mostly learned from this website,

my only question is what do we do if we end up with 11 or 17 teams or some number of teams with which there is no provided example.

hope this helps, also I'm up for helping however it may be needed as far as announcing goes as long as it doesn't interfere with my team winning the tourney. hehe.

I know I don't play bike polo, but if you get stuck in a situation with an odd number of teams and wouldn't mind making it a bit goofier setup - play round robins with an odd number of pools, and advance the the #1 overall team, and then an odd number (top 1, top 3, top 5) from each pool, which would give you an even number. then play a tournament from there. just a thought in case you guys get stuck with an odd number of teams

I can man a grill, as well as help getting food organized and whatnot. I have access to a gas grill that's pretty large, but if someone has one that's more convenient that might work better.

We could as Mick Jeffries to spin some tunes.

Also, I know Turner, Tedder, and possibly Flowers all have tents that we could use for sun cover/ in the event of rain. Would that do it or would we need a few more. I guess we could always ask a few of the bike shops if we could borrow theirs for the day.

Seeing as how i will not be up to playing, I would love to be involved in any way I can. Keeping the brackets, Keeping score, or anouncing are all things I can do. (With regard to announcing: I being of sound mind and body, swear not to disclose any information to the press that might embarrass or incriminate bike polo or the players thereof Wink

If you already have someone to take responsiblity for these things, then I will just assume the position of heckling any team playing a Lexington team. Otherwise count me in for whatever. (Something that will not need me to do alot of running around, considering my foot.)

To answer Drew's question, I think there are two options: This type of bracket revolves around multiples of 4 so, If you have one less team than 4,8, or 16, then the odd team gets a bye seed and does not begin play until the second round. If there is one more than 4,8,or,16 then a preliminary game must be played before the first round. The other options are a switch to a different style of tourney or some type of lottery for the odd team to advance to play the winner of the loosers bracket, this however creates a distinct advantage if there are very many teams.

I could probably do tunes, but someone would need to help me choose. I have at least 100gb of music ready to go.

I could also be an announcer as well. I have heard that my booming voice goes well with a microphone. Unfortunately, I never broke into showbiz.

I felt compelled to say that they were mandatory on the official BGSG website info page. It should be common sense as to why I would do that. Most folks have no idea what bike polo is, but their first thought when you describe it to them is that it is dangerous. Can't say I blame them.

That said, I'm not going to be a helmet nazi on Saturday. I encourage you to bring one if you have one, in the event that for some reason someone from BGSG comes along and says something... but I am ultimately going to leave it up to the players' discretion. You can play in whatever you feel comfortable playing in.

On another note, do you guys think we should do a seeded double-elim. bracket, or just have it be blind team match-ups?

I mean, I think we have a pretty good idea of who the strong teams are going to be... but personally I think everyone around here is pretty darn good at playing polo, and I like the idea of random game assignments. I'd love to see some upsets!

I think double elimination blind draw is the best especially since a lot of these "teams" have never played before so it is hard to judge how they will play together.
