I think both ideas are great and worth trying.
If you do a bit of pre-print hype and offer to mention the names of those who "helped make this possible" on the back, I'm sure there are plenty of young hipster's that would love to see their name in print as helping to fund such and underground/risque project.
I'm not so sure everyone needs to be naked, although it's a viable option. Even some of the photos of you guys in drag are priceless already... There are quite a few on flickr that need to be circulated.

I've never been one to NOT think about things a little too much, but here's a few thoughts I had on the design of our future boards:

I'm for the box corners. The biggest reason is that they will be easiest to construct, and I honestly can't see the justification to build rounded corners when they will be trickier to build, and use more materials in the process. Besides, are we really going to miss the luxury of an angle vs. a curve when what we really need is just something to keep the ball in play?

I'm also for a uniform height all the way around. Especially if we do box corners. I'm not really sure why we've talked about having the corners higher anyway...

On that note, I actually think a lot about the visual impact of whatever we build and how it will affect the courts/park/spectators. On busy game days, especially in Summer, people like to hang out in the grass by the trees... think about how much of the action those folks will miss if they can't see over a 4 ft. wall from the outside. The same is true for being on the inside of the fence; I actually like being able to see the park environment around me... and I'd rather keep those boards as low to the ground as possible to lessen the overall visual impact, and I think 2 ft. boards would be just about right.

Water retention on the court. There's a chance that constructing walls on the surface of the court could lead to issues with water pooling up in spots where it currently does not. We should think about this when we ultimately build them... possibly by leaving some sort of slight gap where it meets the ground, or by cutting grooves, or channels along the bottom edge of the walls where they meet the surface.

The middle barrier. Do we want to have space between the two courts, or do we want one single wall between the two? Also, we need to decide if we want to allow for some sort of hinged "door" that leads into the courts, or if we simply want to wall the whole thing in and climb in and out all the time.

these are just some thoughts I've had, and I hope you guys have been thinking about these sorts of things as well. Please throw out any suggestions, or feel free to dismiss or debunk my concerns about these issues...

Thanks for getting us back on track, b. as you've presented it, 2ft walls with boxed corners seem the most logical and effective thing the do, keeping in mind the view of spectators as well as the function of the boards during play. this will allow for maximization of the use of materials and the best possible design of the boards for play.

I do think a split between the two courts is a great idea, providing boards that can be used by both courts, but maybe built or added on at a later date. 2ft boards dividing the courts may provide a hazard during play and may end up being damaged far more than those by the fence which would have more support. our only other option is to put in 4 foot boards, which could be braced in the middle and form a large, braced wall will separate boards on each side. any thoughts on this?? howbout the cost of 2ft boards all the way around?

btw, a small door with a hinge a the point of entry would be easily built and good for clumsy/inebriated people.

2ft on the fence makes sense to me but from court to court i think 4 ft tall would be better that way no one goes over board (haha) and the space in between will only make the walls stronger, if there is a free standing wall it will fall over. right?

a cross braced 4 ft high middle about 5 ft apart would be the strongest thing i could think of. and just a few tapcons anchoring down the walls to keep from sliding.

so, its been a bit since we discussed this and i'd like to keep this discussion open and active as it is something that needs to happen.

i've been watching some videos from other cities and its very common for them to have 1ft boards. even 1ft boards in the middle as a divider would be fine.

so what would be the final cost on this? say 1 ft boards for just one court and a 1ft divider. we can eventually decide to do both courts and we can borrow the roller hockey barriers for the upcoming tourney.

can we get some idea of where we are on cost and how much money/materials we still need to raise/acquire?? anybody have anything stockpiled as scrap or done any research into getting plywood donated??

anybody?

hey, I was making some shelves for my shed this weekend, and I just happened to have them on their sides.. and I thought about this "wall" discussion I have been reading here. They are palettes, very cheap (as in free), and you could use them to frame your walls.

oh yeah, you can see my lil project bike in the background, too.
