I have been traveling a lot this past month and really just been out of the loop so this might be old news to folks. Last night on my ride home from Al's I rode down University and they had the new bike lanes painted.
Sweet, I was a little nervous that the University would bail when they decided to "try out the bike lanes with the construction barrels."
It is not a huge distance but it really helps with the connectivity. |

they do look nice, but all those parking spaces right beside them kinda worry me. Seems like there's always some compromise when it comes to bike facilities.
"We're going to add these much needed bike lanes... but we'll put a whole lane worth of parking spaces beside them"
"We're opening up a multi-use trail from downtown to the Horse Park... but most of it will still be shared with traffic"
better than nothing at all, though! I'm glad to see some steps in the right direction at least.

| unfortunately though, there has already been a cyclist struck on it. Luckily it was low speed, and he wasnt hurt, but i think additional signage is needed. |

| just saw the new lanes yesterday. there is still a shit ton of gravel that is completely filling the bike lane. might as well not even ride in the damn thing - I thought they were supposed to be doing some repaving in this process? University sure as hell needs it. |

Burch witnessed my bunny-hop over a huge crater of a pothole during the Halloween Alleycat... right in the middle of the brand new University bike lane. WTF?

This kind of stuff is really getting to be an all too frequent occurence. I've been dealing with it fine thanks to hardcase tires, but some of these obstacles are downright ludicrous, right now i'm thinking about the car accident shrapnel at euclid/transylvania that has been pushed just into the bike lane, and has remained there since Thursday.
To anyone that has ridden in other "bike-friendly" cities, is the kind of bike lane refuse seen here the same, or do we still have catching up to do? I understand it might seem like a labor intensive task, but seems to me in instances where a construction crew leaves a trail of pebble-sized gravel from Euclid/MLK to Euclid/Rose, there should be someone on that crew with the foresight to remove hazardous debris from the bike lane...do they ever leave softball sized chunks of concrete in the car lanes?

For stuff in the road you can call Lexcall at 311 and the can get it taken care of. I have called a few times and within a week the problem has been solved.
I am not sure how this relates to gravel on campus since it is construction debris but it might not hurt to call. |

In northern kentucky, bike lanes, the few there are, are terrible as well, but nobody really uses them either. |
