Thanks to everyone who designs and prints the LexRides posters. They are amazing. I'm no expert, but the graphics, hand carved plates, and special inks are impressive. |

I can't speak for everyone, but since being a poster artist is basically my main job, I'll say "thanks!" first.
Those responsible for the bike posters you've seen locally over the past few years include:
myself (Brian - although sometimes people confuse me with Tim Buckingham). In full disclosure, I operate Cricket Press with my wife, Sara. We're mostly known for our hand-printed posters which incorporate screen printing and letterpress processes.
Alex Brooks: another local printmaker who owns and operates Press 817. Alex does beautifully crafted letterpress prints that are often hand-carved from wood blocks.
Greg Abernathy: Greg is a skilled cartographer who is handy with graphic design and illustration. Not only has he designed several memorable posters for the races, but he's also responsible for many of the race maps given out with the manifests.
Boyd Shearer: Another map-maker by trade who has expertise with print and web design. Boyd is one half of the local company OutrageGIS Mapping, which specializes in GIS maps of local and regional trails and parks. Boyd designed and illustrated the recent Bike Prom poster, as well as the map and manifest included in the prom packet. _________________ ------------[] O |

Brian, you're nothing like Tim...your auras are completely different. Tim is woodlands and chamomile and you are flint and earl grey. holdup...i need to shake up my eight ball for a better description....
I agree the posters over the years have been awesome. There's some talented frackin people in this town and especially on this board. The Oaks day race is my personal favorite.
I've been lucky to make one poster (with the help of brokebike) and in all hope I'll do it again. I think what's cool about this group is that if you wanted to do a race or event, you could put up a poster that was drawn with a sharpie on a brown paper bag, and it'd fly. People love bikes.
For posterity, why not have a gallery of posters, spoke cards, etc... maybe in the Past Events section? |

Brian and I have discussed this and it is in the plans...we just need to find the free time to make it happen.
I really look forward to seeing the designs that come forth for the races and have really have enjoyed working on the handful of posters I have contributed.

Brad Flowers was actually trying to organize a Lexington Bike Art exhibit this past year to coincide with the Bike Lexington events in May. The idea was to basically take elements of Lexington's bike culture - everything from art created by cyclists, bike sculpture, bike photography, actual bikes owned and ridden by people here in town that were gorgeous enough to be considered "gallery worthy", etc. Of course the posters, spokecards, t-shirts and various ephemera connected to the alleycat races would've been an essential part of that show, but I believe Brad ran into a lot of difficulty finding the right venue in time to organize the show.
I think this is an idea that would be cool to revisit the next time the opportunity rolls around. _________________ ------------[] O |

brokebike, i would mention it to kenzie, the city is always looking for things to display and will find a spot for it. the only thing not to do is contact harold tate. he does not like bikes, and was really pissed off when a bike commuter lockerhouse and showers was proposed last year and the mayor actually liked it, from what i understand. He does help organize some gallery hop exhibits though, but i would be you would be better off with a bank or kentucky theater maybe downtown. |

Kenzie was well aware of Brad's idea for the show, and no, spaces downtown aren't exactly just sitting around waiting for someone to come along with an exhibit idea so that they can gladly offer up their space. It doesn't work out like that. If "the city" were some huge altruistic entity like you make it sound, then perhaps we wouldn't have bulldozers digging a giant slag pit in the middle of our town.
One unfortunate thing that happened was that when Brad initially asked LexArts about the idea, they were all for it and everything seemed to be looking good, and then when it really came down to it, Jim Clark decided that he didn't want to have anything to do with it.
Like anything in this town, it comes down to knowing the right person in a position to help you get what you want done... not just the energy and excitement to make it happen. Sucks, but it's true.
As for Harold Tate, that guy can shove it up his ass. _________________ ------------[] O

yeah, that post was pretty inebriated so disregard it, but you are right, its the organizations that are much more willing than the city. tate helped us set up an architecture exhibition, and then tried to downplay the enthusiasm of the mayor (who, dont get me wrong, i think is a complete scumbag) and others about several bike related projects, which was the whole point of the exhibition, to get support for different ideas.... he only wants to see what he wants to see, which i am sure is consistant with how most people in the city gov are.
I guess i was suggesting the city though because they do have the mayors office open with art, and given how receptive newberry has been to bikes, he may be willing to display there, or in the grand ballroom on the first floor which never gets used and is a decent space. I can understand how you and others here would not want your work affiliated with him though.
victorian square was pretty enthusiastic about giving us space to set up there. not sure how receptive the webbs would be to the bike community though, given its almost unanimous hatred of them, and again, the affiliation issue. we basically made a call and were in though.
i dunno, just tossing out ideas. this is something I would really like to help with though, should some of the artists need a hand. |

yeah, it's funny, in our business it can be a badge of honor or insult;
ephemeral, in effect, only important and relevant for a limited period of time.
but things like posters, cards, bookmarks, etc., made with care, are also objects of beauty and import. worth collecting, worth framing, making ephemera it's own category. not quite art, not quite trash. somewhere inbetween _________________ How about, "Can you NOT rip a giant hole in our downtown and erect a big goddamn penis full of crappy chain businesses?"

Getting a little feisty.
I think the gallery to ask is the Central Library Gallery. A couple of us with Town Branch Trail worked with Peggy and other good folks there to hold and hang a photography contest of Town Branch. I believe she said any resident or non-profit can have an exhibit, as long as they're willing to wait. To have the whole gallery though might take some convincing.
In terms of haters of bikers, I think the bike community is sufficiently large and diverse that it can't generalized. It's like saying you hate the car community...it's meaningless, but rather you might hate hummers or the people who drive them. But maybe it's not the people per se, since you don't know them, but instead you hate their over-consumptive arrogance. Point is nobody hates the biking community, so it's a non-starter to say someone does. |

This is true... Peggy McAllister from the Library is great to work with, and I know from past experience with other art endeavors over the past decade or so that they are very open to exhibits of local artists and organizations.
There is quite a long wait, though. For example, the whole reason Cricket Press obtained the opportunity to exhibit for the show that is opening tonight, is because Alex and I had contacted them about a year and a half ago, seeking space for the "Salad Days" letterpress show that eventually ended up at the Downtown Arts Center. The only opening Peggy had at the time was for Fall 2008, which was too long for us to wait... so she asked if Sara and I would be interested in taking that open spot instead. Galleries that are popular and have their shit together as far as organization are usually booked at least a year in advance... often more. _________________ ------------[] O |
