I think I've just about had it with Rosebud's after last night. The constant hassling of the patrons by the door / sidewalk staff reached a new level of ridiculousness last night when a couple of us were asked to remove our bikes from THEIR BIKE RACK because we were told that the bikes were in the way of people walking on the sidewalk... and this is coming from a bar that extends those stupid rope barriers as close to the sidewalk curb as possible, causing people to have to walk out on the street anyway!

I mean, I know it's tight there, and it gets packed after a certain time of night, but asking patrons to move their bikes from their intended facilities is beyond stupid. They should've moved their rack in the first place if it is in an inconvenient spot, or removed it altogether.

screw that place.

Is that one of the racks that the city dumbasses set up perpendicular to the sidewalk?

nope. this one is actually parallel to the sidewalk... it's just really close to a utility pole, a huge junction box, and a mass of newspaper dispenser boxes that are right there on a tight corner of the sidewalk.

In all actuality, our bikes weren't blocking anyone's way on the sidewalk... at least not anymore than any of the other obstacles you'd encounter right there in that one spot. There was still a pathway through... I guess it just wasn't as wide as they would've liked.

But still... they made us move our bikes from a designated bike rack. Just goes to show that more thought needs to go into the facilities if we're going to have them. This especially concerns placement in areas of high foot traffic, or in areas where many patrons could possibly be riding their bikes and needing a place to park them.

In the official search for a new lexrides downtown hangout that gets Rosebud a big red X.

We need a chart to keep track of the pluses and minuses.

funny you should mention that, because we talked about this very subject last night... no doubt everyone will be thinking the same thing around 10pm tonight when everyone's ready to hit up a bar.

"Where we gonna go?"

the side walk in front of busters seems like a good spot. just pull up our own drinks like we did on their last business day.

I too had my hackles rasied at Rosebud's last night, having words with one of the dickhead bartenders and a popped-collar patron. Fuck Rosebuds. I am increasingly pleased, however, by the bourbon bar a block over on Cheapsode. Had another strong experience there last night.
Pros: Sidewalk tables
Superstrong drinks
Decent prices
Very nice bartenders
Cons: Poor beer selection (good draught though)
Not exactly my crowd

I like it. Bars not to our satisfaction? Make our own!

The sunken area at the main street entrance to the 5/3 building would be good too. More places for sitting.

yeah alot of nights i cant stand rosebuds. bluegrass tavern is good, but like was said, the crowd is a little iffy. there are 3 new bars supposedly opening in vic squre over 4th of july weekend, maybe there will be a decent one there, unlikely though, given the landlord.

the thing is, and we talked about this last night - the crowds that eventually descend upon Rosebud once 11pm rolls around, you know the type; clean-cut dudes with pink pique polo shirts (popped collars), madras shorts and loafers... arriving in taxis with the girls in the gold shiny dresses that look like potato sacks - that crowd will always find a way to sniff out a bar and completely fucking ruin the atmosphere, because at that point it becomes a giant frat social.

Like, even if Busters opens up in a new location... if everything is nice and new and sterile, like most bars when they open up, and if seems just a little too welcoming for something like, a bachelorette party for example, then in a matter of weeks the place will be overrun with white ball caps and pastel shirts and the next thing you know a good potential bar is ruined.

it's for this very reason that I am skeptical about any new bar that could potentially turn into just another college meat market.

I've pretty much always hated rosebud it is full of shit heads and most of the employees are cut from the same cloth. I always got the feeling that the bartenders there go out of their way to make you feel like it is a privilege to drink there. when in actuality the best thing about the place is its' proximity to goodfellas.

ok... so after recalling this little tale to Keith Lovan with LFUCG, he reinforced the fact that Rosebud had no right to ask us to remove our bikes from the bike racks, since they are indeed public facilities (which was what I thought, but wanted to check to make sure). The real issue here wasn't that we had too many bikes locked up to the bike rack (there were only three bikes on the rack at the time), but rather Rosebud's insistence that they spread their patio area tables as far out as possible and right up next to the bike racks - making it difficult to keep one from interfering with the other.

Why am I making such an issue of this? Well, it just struck a nerve, I guess. Most importantly it conveyed an attitude from the standpoint of the Rosebud staff that bikes (especially those of customers who are paying money for beers and bar service) are a nuisance and the facilities designated for their use can be controlled at the whim of the staff when it is convenient for them.

I considered sending a complaint to management, but one visit to the Rosebud website, with its thinly veiled bandwagon patriotism and stubborn stance on smokers' rights makes me think my little rant wouldn't even get a second thought.

as Burch said so eloquently before, fuck 'em.

I'm offended by the total crapitude of their web site.

Did Lovan say anything about how much of the sidewalk places like Rosebud are allowed to block off with tables?

What about locking a bunch of POS bikes to the posts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights?

I mean it would suck to waste the space but if they are not going to let folks use it anyway, then why not make a point? We could lock 8 frames up (four on each side).

Dunno, I was not there but I would be happy to help send a message to them. Especially, with how much beer and how many events we have held there in the past. Plus, with bike lex 2009 we were talking about trying to make that a party street. If they have this attitude then to hell with them.

I stopped going to Rosebud back in the day when, shortly after 9/11, the owner stopped carrying all French wines and had some patriotic type signs up in the bar. Definitely seemed like the moves of a Bush supporter.
