I will be taking the goals with us to the tourny, And I would really like to have the netting fixed or replaced, and the back lined with old broken poles that are secure. (I have some pole to donate)haha

What do you all think should be our next step?
oh and I will be in Austin for a week starting now

Have they offered compensation for gas? Also, I've always been curious as to the reason why broken poles get tied to the bottom cross bar. Why is that? We'll also need to do some research on the interwebs in order to find the cheapest prices for nets. I totally agree that they need replacing. Perhaps they might also want to pay a portion of that too.

Those things are a good haul, It took Pat and I few trips to get them down to the court so it will take a truck or big van to get them there.

I think y'all should get some good gas money. After all, didn't we pay gas money for the temporary courts?

The poles help make a nice "clang" when the ball makes it in the goal, as well as helping kill the ball's momentum so it doesn't ricochet out as hard.

I agree on the gas money.
Perhaps I misunderstood, but I thought the standing agreement with the soccer players using the courts was that they needed to pitch in and/or replace the nets. We've certainly put some wear on them, but I would argue they've done more. They also play 5-6 days a night as opposed to our 2 (and usually with only one set of goals).
I just think it seems silly for us to go to the trouble/cost of replacing the nets, only for them to tear them up in a couple of months. That being said, I'm glad they're using the courts.

Ok they have sent me money for gas. And the soccer players said to give them a price and they will hook some money up.

So now I think we should pick some nets out.
And James is right on no questionable goals.

What are the problems to address with the current nets? Are they breaking more in the net itself, or is it the attachment system breaking? Also, if we need to get some more foam for the goals, I can start saving some from bikes we get shipped to the shop, it will fit perfectly.

I think we need a heavier duty netting, plus the attachment to the goals seems to be a huge problem - especially when soccer balls hit the net and rip it out of the velcro zip ties.

So who knows anything about nets and ordering? If someone wants to propose a few and have a vote, let's get started on that. If we need to order nets, this needs to happen in the next couple days.

Chris has contact info for the soccer guys who are willing to throw in $$. Yes, we have gas money and we plan to take them to Bloomington in the Dogtown truck.

could you shape the orange construction fencing to use as nets that are more sturdy?

Are you taking all four goals?

I see the traditional way is to "lace" the nets to the goal with twine, but I can get some serious-duty zip ties from shipped bikes at the shop, something like 3/4 inch wide, 3-4mm thick and if they are left intact, around a foot long. I'd be surprised if these ties broke from anything less than side cutters, and with a thin enough flat blade screwdriver, you can push back the pawl(?) and reuse them.

As far as the nets go, I would guess genuine hockey nets would be plenty strong seeing as they take the abuse of 100mph hockey pucks and blade-wielding hooligans crashing into them; plus the holes are sized correctly.

Here's a site with nets, both bulk and pre-cut:

6mm Twine, U. V. Treated
2-7/8" mesh (1-7/16" squares)
100% nylon, knotless netting
600# break strength

http://www.arizonasportsequipment.com/hockey/hockey-netting/

I'm not sure the exact dimensions of the goals, but it would be best to get nets too big than too small, I'd guess the nets should be a little bigger anyway to have some slack leftover to catch the ball instead of risking it breaking through.

After attaching the nets, then we could cover sections of the bars as needed with foam, basically layering over the underlying ties/net to give it another layer of impact protection.

Anyone...? Bueller?

when we first bought nets, everything we came across got really expensive when you added it all up. we have lots of goals. so we went with what we found was cheapest. the goals are 6x3x2.

How much did the original nets cost?

So I just got off the phone with the guy from Arizona sports equip and he priced our nets to be $61 a goal he said it would be "pro size" and he could ship it the same day if we called early in the day.

and that netting is NICE! plus he said he would throw the twine in with it.

What do you all think?

So that would be $240 for all four goals? I thing the ones we bought may have been closer to $20 each. Also, I'm guessing if these are "pro size" that they'll be super big for our goals. Our goals are considerably smaller than hockey goals.

Sweet, let me know if you still need the heavy duty zip-ties and foam pieces, I'm stockpiling it here at the shop. Wink
