Here's the email I received from Jessica late this afternoon:

Quote:
Hello everyone! You are receiving this email because Clark and I thought you might be interesting in keeping up-to-date on our progress in relocating Buster's. If you do not want to receive future emails, just let me know, and I will take you off the list. On the other hand, if you know others who may be interested in being added to our email list, you can email me their contact info.

Well, the big news is that we signed a lease on the Old Tarr Distillery this morning. We are leasing the entire building, and the plan is to re-open Buster's just as it was before in the front half of the space, reserving a large portion of the rear of the building as a concert hall. Preliminary estimates show that we'll be able to hold between 1,200 and 1,500 patrons. This addition to Lexington's ever-growing music scene will allow us to host regular shows and events featuring prominent regional and national acts. Bizlex posted an article about our relocation today at http://www.bizlex.com/Articles-c-2009-02-02-84743.113117_Busters_to_relocate.html.

We will take possession of the building on May 17th (there are several events scheduled to take place there in the interim) and plan to open mid-August. We hope to keep as much of the original character of Buster's as possible, with the pool tables, juke box, video games, and general laid back vibe, although we will probably revamp the juke box selection to include a greater variety of punk. In addition, our goal is to keep Buster's cover-free. In other words, you can come hang out at Buster's even when there is a show without paying a cover. Performances will be separately ticketed, and will give guests the additional access to the concert hall.

We think the Distillery District represents the best of what Lexington has to offer - it is a development almost exclusively centered around the adaptive reuse of historic buildings, which is very important to us, and it aims to create an arts and entertainment district that rivals those in larger cities. We encourage you to check out the website for the District at www.lexingtondistillerydistrict.com.

Also, keep your eye out for a Buster's page on Facebook, which we hope to have up in the next few days. Our website will take a bit longer, but should be up in a couple months.

We look forward to sharing Buster's with all of you. Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions. See you in August!

Jessica and Clark Case

whe i first saw the headline that buster's was reopeing, i was a little bit down (just for a second). i have been completely unimpressed with dame1A. it made me sad to think of Buster's going the same route. but after reading the whole article, i think this sounds brilliant and like such a good sign for our fair city. good luck to them. i feel like they can make it into a positive place to be.

any word if the concert hall would be all-ages or 21+? it is my hope that they will be all ages, but i realize that is easier said than done.

with the size of the Old Tarr building as a bar/venue, that finally gives Lexington a music venue that has the capacity to rival other big clubs in nearby cities.

Distillery District Busters would be twice the capacity of Headliners and Southgate House, and nearly as big as Bogarts.

The option for NO COVER is VERY WELCOME.

My first response is that place is huge. It is hard for me to reimagine busters as first a music venue and well busters second. I am excited that there is something else out there but I guess a little nervous at the same time.

I agree. The intimacy of Busters and the laidbackness of it is what I will always miss, and I doubt you'll ever be able to achieve that with a building as big as Old Tarr.

But... it could kinda sorta maybe simulate the dynamic that existed with Busters and the Dame back in the good old days... hang out and drink beers in one part, and if you want to pay a cover to see a band in another part, you can... without having to walk but a few feet.

I dunno.

either way it's literally a 25 second bike ride from my house (spring st) so I'm hoping that i can host some backyard bbq's and cornhole before the shows for us.

As much as I love Johnny and B, they weren't what made Busters what it was, they were just a small part of a larger whole. Of course those of us who called the place home know that there will never be another place in Lexington like what Busters was. Never.

Why not keep the name? The Cases bought the business and can do as they wish, and frankly I think it's kinda smart to keep the name, since the familiarity of a long-time Lexington establishment can go a long ways. You are reopening a business that was ripped away unscrupulously from it's patrons. Keeping the name means you attract those who were already familiar with the business - maybe not all of them, but I bet you'd be surprised. I'm no marketing expert, but I'd say it's a pretty smart move.

Hell, if I owned it, I'd keep the name just to spite all the bullshit that happened downtown this past summer.

how is it the same business when it's in a different location, new building, different type of venue, different owners, and more than likely they'll sell booze which means frat boys and sorostitutes will over-run the place. Maybe we could compromise and they could call it Famous Busters (as in Ray's pizza v. Famous Ray's). Not saying I'm not going to check it out and hope it does well but should the modern day Misfits really be called the Misfits or are they just trying to ride the wave of the original line-up? Think about it.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make because no one is saying that it is going to be the same as old Busters.

You can argue over semantics all you want, but you're preaching to the choir here.

Do you know if they have any experience running a bar and/or music venue? It'd be a shame for it to open and then close again in 6 months.

I've only briefly met them, and that was right at the end of the old Busters era. I have no idea what the extent of their experience is. More than likely, I'd say they saw an opportunity, and took advantage of it... time will tell.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not carrying the torch for Busters and I'm still just as pissed now about what happened this past summer. It has also made me about 100% more pessimistic as I was before. But I get the feeling that folks on here generally want to see the Distillery District become a good thing for Lexington, right? So what is it? Would you rather see an attempt at making a reopened, reconstituted Busters make a new start there - no matter what the outcome, or would you guys rather see some fucking piano bar or some art gallery that none of us will ever go to more than once move into Old Tarr?

I'll side with the former.

Its critical that the "anchor" venue in the distillery district is a long term success, regardless of what it is. In the long term, it would be better to have a profitable yuppy-ass craphole that would draw more businesses to Manchester than to have three cool places open and close in the same year.

That said, I hope Busters 2.0 is a huge success.
