Brad Flowers asked me to pass this along.

see you there PTW

It is that time again. The coldest night of the year is upon us (we hope). Thursday night it is supposed to get down to 4 degrees with snow flurries, great weather for a bike ride...and maybe some beer. So here are the details, please pass it along:

Frozen Chosen
Thursday, January 15
10 PM sharp (I am not waiting in the cold)
Gratz Park (3rd street side by the naked kids fountain)
bring a camera

Last time I accepted a facebook invitation to meet someone in the park and the words "naked kids" and "camera" were used there was an unfortunate misunderstanding with the police department. I'll be staying home this time, per the terms of my probation.

Start thinking what bar we are gonna end up at. Gonna need some bourbon or some heavy stout to warm up. Gonna need a place with lots of space to lay all my layers.

Gonna be an epic night!

I wish I could join, but I will be working. Just so happens that I work in a bar that sells bourbon and beer. I thought I would throw that out in case you couldn't find a bar to go to. Have fun and maybe see you later!

It was fun as hell. Somewhere between 16-18 people showed up. We rode maybe 5 miles. It's funny how that short of a distance seems so much longer when it's that cold out.

Stopped at Pazzo's for some beers, then ended the night at Al's.

I bet 5 miles seemed longer in the cold.

I always feel ok when riding in the cold with a group but when its time to split off to head home and you're riding solo its even worse.

maybe not with a few drinks in you though!

the opposite happened to me. i rode quick to get to gratz park and the same on my way home. i stayed warm on both those rides. riding in the group froze my ass though. it was a slow ride.

I think beyond just doing it for the sake of doing it, a ride like this has its benefits for people who may want to ride their bikes more than they already do - no matter what the weather is like year 'round.

Riding in weather like last night makes you quickly realize what parts get coldest, where you need to add more warmth, and what amount of layering is just right to avoid sweating too much.

For each of the past couple of years, I've tried to invest in one or two crucial items of cold or wet weather gear that I didn't have the year before - so hopefully over the course of a few winters, I'll be pretty well-equipped to ride in whatever.
