I've seen you guys talking about going there so I thought it would still be cool but I tried to go in that place last night and it was nothing but chode-ville. What's up with that? Is it only sucky on weekends? Last time I went there was in like 2002 and I never saw it that chock full of douche juice, they were even playing Korn. I miss busters _________________ Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle |

who's been talking about hanging at Marikka's?
Yeah, that place sucks. I don't care how many different beers a bar has in stock, if there's more tools than the hardware section at Sears then I'm not hanging out there... Marikka's has pretty much always been that way. _________________ ------------[] O |

i never go on the weekends, because i usually try to stay closer to home, being a compulsive binge drinker, but the few times ive been there in the week, its been pretty mellow.

since never. I guarantee you Bud products still sell 10 to 1, probably more so even at a joint like Marikka's that boasts such a wide variety of beers.
Like Pazzos, Marikkas is another classic example of bars expanding not to make their experience any better for their customers or to better serve them, but to simply pack more of the assholes in. _________________ ------------[] O |

Meh, I'll go on occasion because it's stumbling distance from home for me. I can find a few favorites of mine that can be hard to source otherwise, and I can play darts while I'm at it. The crowd there does generally suck though, I will admit that. |

I have lived .20 miles from there for 5 years and have been there less than 10 times. I believe Rich drinks there but we have never been able to rally folks to go there during bike-n-beers.
Sucks that a bar so close sucks so much |

I can throw a rock from my front porch and hit Chevy Chase Inn, but I'd say I've definitely been there less than 10 times in the 10 years I've lived here.
I'm not saying that CCI isn't a cool place to grab a drink, because I would much rather go there than Marikka's. But I think a bar either does it for you, or it doesn't.
There's also a lot to be said for becoming a frequent patron of a particular place and spreading the word; bringing friends with you and encouraging others to do the same. I think the crowd that hangs out on the forum here has definitely established rapport at several local establishments and knows that it can usually always be treated well and can have a good time at those places. SOme are more of a given than others; Al's (and now likely the Sidecar), Green Lantern, Lower 48, Brooklyn... I'd say even CCI to some extent.
The thing with some bars is that they are just too overrun and popular among a more general set of weekend college-type bar goers - that it is very hard to enjoy those places and feel like they are comfortable places to drink and relax with friends. Even when you frequently show up 8-10 strong with the same friends, the workers can't tell if it's your first time there, or your 100th. The continuous bad experiences with Rosebud was a prime example of this. _________________ ------------[] O |
