| What about everybody having a whistle? If you have to stop you blow your whistle, and if you hear a whistle blow yours. It seems easy and everybody will be heard from the mass. You just have to hope that there won't be any idiots out there that will blow their whistle just to see if it works. |

you guys are making things way too complicated. you have to remember that it's important to have fun and relax too. i can't think of anything more unfun and nerve wracking than riding around with a huge group of inexperienced riders, all blowing whistles. fuck, i'd ride into oncoming traffic just to end it all.
it really just depends on having someone who's experienced and intelligent at the front, and everyone else knowing the rules and following. and being un-idiotic.

the ride i did in columbus was about 40-50 strong. we only stopped when someone got a flat, broke a headset, broke a bottom bracket and at the scheduled midway stop. there was lots of communication in particular with traffic comming from behind. car back would be called out from the back of the pack and it would be repeated until it reached the front. this whole communication aspect was quite amazing to experience. turns were called out and lights were corked if need be. we did stop at lights and didn't run them if we caught one. sometimes it took a minute longer to restart the ride when someones ride got damaged because someone opened a bottle of champagne. but it wasn't a big deal. everyone new that they would have to share their bottle and finish it quick, or risk holding the ride behind. there was also a little bit of a preride idea of where the ride was going to go. though like any large group ride, it constantly took a different route.
as for someone elses post asking if the ride went out of town....i guess that depends on your definition of that and how you compare the use of the word town if you live in columbus or lexington.
i would say that we rode really far out of the downtown campus area, but that we were easily still with in columbus. in comparison to lexington, it would have been like riding thru our usual critical mass stomping grounds, plus almost all neighborhoods outside the circle including man o' war.
