When would be a good time to meet at the space and talk about moving this forward? A weekday eve? Sunday afternoon? I'm self employed so it can be whenever for me.

Thurs won't work for me. Just found out my girlfriend's mom is coming to stay for the night. The space is right outside of downtown but I'd rather keep it's exact location off the general post to spare my landlord any hassels. I'm also not going to waste my time on this unless a significant number of people are willing to be involved. I have my own shop space. I thought this would be something the local bike community might be interested in, but maybe everyone wants to keep working on their bikes alone in their kitchens.

What about Sunday at noon?

I think a lot of people would be very happy to use the space but I think we will end up with a core group of folks who help get it off the ground and stay running. I think we can get folks with energy to make this happen.

Seems like people are interested, but I for one am, to put it politely, cautiously optimistic. Not knowing who you are, where the space is, if I'll end up locked in a trunk with my arms and legs cut off if I meet you at an undisclosed location, etc.

Why don't you come to Pat's bike-n-beer-n-birthday on the 31st and we'll talk about your idea?

I'm not sure what type of reaction you expected, but I wouldn't get too discouraged... after all, this forum is by no means the only source for getting the attention of folks who would be interested in a community bike shop project.

Like politicalhero stated, given the size of Lexington and the small, yet still growing bike culture here, I wouldn't expect too many people to come flocking all at once. The core of this community is still only a handful of people who have the motivation and organizational skills that are slightly above average when it comes to these types of things, but that said, it also means that they are people with very full plates of commitments and responsibilities as it is. Given time, you'll see more folks step up and contribute in more ways as more stuff happens, but I wouldn't just throw my hands up if the first opportunity for a meeting falls through.

This is something that would be really great to have here, and I think a lot of folks would be into it.

Sunday at noon would work for me. It would be great to have a space where bike hipsters get together and work on their bikes, but the real benefit of this would be to make bikes and bike services available to those who HAVE to use a bike for transportation and who often cannot afford to have their bikes serviced at LBSs. Earn-a-bike programs for teens is another popular program with community bike shops around the country. I think that we could work with UK surplus to secure a very steady stream of abandoned bicycles at low-no cost. WWBL would also be willing to donate some basic stuff from our shop to help get this off the ground. Also seems like a great cause to host a fund raiser alleycat for... Anyway, we should definitely meet about this. Lexington needs and is ready for a true community bike shop. GSD... thats Get Shit Done in yuppy speak.

My name is Rod Lindauer and I'm a local sculptor. I did that stainless steel piece in the courtyard of main and rose amoung others around town.
My landlord is hip to donating space and I've already talked with him about it. He is extremely busy with his fancy real estate deals and I don't feel comfortable posting locations ect. here on the net for any idiot to run wild with. I'm available sunday at 1pm if that works for others. We can meet downtown and bike over to the space.

1pm works for me. Thanks for re-energizing this idea Rod. It has surfaced a couple times in the past couple years but has faded because we have not had a good line on space. Where would you like to meet downtown?

I feel like it would be a good idea to include the Bluegrass Cycling Club.

They have a solid base of volunteers and people that would come and work, bring their kids, and really have a lot of knowledge.

Would anyone be opposed to my posting it on their message board?

No prob with posting anywhere you feel will get results. How about meeting by the shower fountain on main and lime? Sunday 1pm.

I posted it in this thread by mistake... sorry. It is now in the other community bike shop thread.

I can do 1pm on Sunday as well.
