im going to oregon for a week in september and i'd like to take my wheels but where in fuck's name can i find a box with these dimensions?
from the airline's website
If the bicycle(s) are packed in a container that is over 50 lbs (23kg) and/or 62 (157 cm) total linear inches (L + W + H), a $100 service charge applies each way. The service charge is in addition to any excess baggage charges that may apply. Bicycle equipment over 70lbs (32 kg) will not be accepted as checked baggage.
assuming the width of the box is less than seven, that leaves 55 inches of length and height to accommodate the frame. what the hell?

i think you can rent them at bike stores. and they are always oversized. i had some luck with oversized stuff by dropping it off with the luggage valets at the front door, they didnt charge me. but that was a few years ago and with the financial pinch airlines are in, they might not go for it

also, you might consider shipping it to yourself, i think its only like 50 bucks, but then you had to ship it early and get it back later.

i have a bike bag with big pieces of foam. you can borrow it to see if you can get it under 60 linear inches, then you don't have to pay a fee. also if you do end up getting a bike box, it's usually cheaper to tell them it's "bike parts" and not a whole bike.

I always just grab a empty wheel box from a bike shop they are throwing out. Stuff it with styrofaom and plastic then send it on its way.
