My name is Rod Lindauer and I'm a local sculptor with a shop in Lex. I worked some with Plan B in New Orleans when I was living there. I've got a line on free shop space for a community bike shop. I'm thinking it would serve as a collecting/storage space for bikes and bike parts, a diy bike repair/building space, a low cost recycled bike outlet, and a hub for bike activities. I'm interested in finding people who'd be willing to work with me on this. What night next week would be good for us to meet and discuss this? Anyone interested?

This sounds interesting... especially if you have free space! I've helped out in the past with graphics and design work for local bike shops and other bike-related programs, and enjoy doing stuff like that if you think you'd need that sort of thing.

I'd be available any time next week after Monday.

I would also like to help out any way I can, I work 8-6 most days of the week, so I cant ever make it to wildcat wheels in time to tinker during the summer (and hardly could go during the schoolyear), and it would be awesome.

I can help out with any construction or renovation needed as well. This is something that might even get some legs from the LFGUC's bike people. Though, i cant say youd neccessarily want them involved, given their current streak

what is also needed desperately in Lexington, is a non-profit group dedicated to promoting bicycling. I think it would be pretty easy to get the city's blessing and assistance, as well as charitable efforts from other businesses as well.

A community shop like this would be a great foundation in the event that something like this ever gets going here. Perhaps down the road...

I know they're a bunch of "roadies" but isn't this kind of what the bluegrass cycling club is designed for? I'm sure they probably have 501c3 non-profit status and all that, plus they are cycling advocates. They might not be as active as you would like but why not join an already existing club and try to take on a leadership role? I am not a member of BCC, I'm just saying. Hopefully I don't sound like a dick, cause I'm not trying to be one.

Respectfully, no. The BCC does good work for what they are, and while I am admittedly not a member, I believe I can say with confidence that they are a far cry from what I am thinking. I'm talking about something that is more of a community-minded entity, delving into more of the issues involving commuter cycling advocacy, education, safe cycling routes of all kinds throughout Fayette and surrounding counties... advocacy for more trails and bike facilities within the parks, etc... something that appeals to a broader range of people and has a really cool, inviting feel to it.

You guys are probably getting sick of me touting this, but something like this is what I keep coming back to as inspiration:
http://bike-pgh.org

I really can't see the BCC moving too far beyond what its current MO is. While I think the charitable causes the BCC contributes to is a really great thing, the fact is that it is a club defeats the purpose of being a true open resource for the public. In no way am I dissing it, I'm just sayin'.

I get what your saying. It's kind of the same thing with the LBC in louisville, they leave all the trail advocacy stuff up to kymba and I'm not sure how much they do in the way of advocacy for commuting but I'm sure they were supportive of the establishment of bike lanes which whether they wanted them to have safer training rides or not, if they are in downtown areas they benefit commuters. The thing that bothers me (currently) is the bike lane on richmond rd. into downtown, specifically that area where the road narrows and there is no bike lane, its kind of stupid but fortunately the traffic starts getting slower at that point. I'm talking about the Magee's region.

I ride that bike lane all the time and it is an interesting example of how complicated something as simple as a bike lane can be. The bike lane on Richmond Rd technically ends near the Shriner hospital/Idle Hour area. They even helpfully spray painted "end bike lane" on the road. From there on into town it is just shoulder. I think it has something to do with the seemingly random patchwork of city vs state owned roads and it transitions from one to the other right there.

As for the community bike shop, I'm all for it and would be interested in helping out. We've sort of used Wildcat Wheels in the past, but it is supposed to be for staff and students. I've always felt a bit guilty about diverting their resources, even though Shane has been great about that sort of thing.

I really like the idea of a Lexington-specific non-profit devoted to bike advocacy. It seems like we've already got a pretty great framework for it as far as BPAC, LexRides, and then throwing in some interested parties as far as BCC or the UK cycling team go. The Pittsburgh site looks great - its definitely something that we should look in to. I know non-profits mean an investment to get 501(c)3 status, as well as general operations. But money wouldn't be an issue as much as getting organized and effective. I think it's brilliant.

on a related note, if you haven't seen Michigan State's bike page, check it out, it's something for Wildcat Wheels to aspire to (if only we could get that sort of investment from the university): http://www.bikes.msu.edu

Chicago has a couple of great community / non-profit bike shops. While I was up there this weekend, I picked up one of these amazing posters, printed for The Recyclery up in Evanston by a friend of mine who lives up there.

Hi There,
I think this is an incredible idea. I will be pretty busy until Nov. 5th but would love to help anyway I can.
Thanks for your efforts. If you have an email list please add me to it and keep me posted.
