Damn. Shouldn't have gotten caught up in the smug like that.
Saw three of the new non-police-dept parking contractors driving these electric chariot things on the sidewalk. Because that's all kinds of legal, no?

yeah, they should definitely fall under the illegal side of the law since its illegal to ride bikes on the side-walk. In Amsterdam they had a big to-do about making it illegal for police and others to use those things you stand up on with the two wheels beside each other, there are some you can rent at the riverfront in louisville, I can't think what they're called. _________________ Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle |

Some lawification:
LFUCG charter and code of ordinances, chapter 18, section 18-1, subsection 15
"motorvehicle - every vehicle which is self propelled"
chapter 18, section 18-25
"the driver of a vehicle shall not drive within any sidewalk area except at a permanent or temporary driveway"
chapter 18, section 18-155, subsection D
"members of the division of police are authorized to ride bicycles, horses and segways on any sidewalk or roadway including those in the business district"
In other words, those are motor vehicles and they aren't legal to ride on the sidewalk, even if they were being operated by the police, which they aren't. |

funny, i work right across from where they keep these things next to the old courthouse (at least thats where i always see them.
i had to walk to another office today, and beat the guy down the sidewalk, because the thing was too bulky. the guy had to maneuver around trashcans, planters, and people. |

because I was curious, I emailed the folks at Lexpark.org to ask them about the legalities and safety of using these on city sidewalks. Here's what I got as a response:
Quote: | thank you for expressing your concern. We will continue training our employees on the use of these Chariots. They are street legal and where that makes the most sense we will be using them in the streets. We do have permission from the Police Department to use them on the sidewalk as they will function much like a segway. It is possible that we will need to have the ordinance changed.
I share your concerns and definitely do not want to set a bad example for others who are not performing “Official Duties”. We will work toward minimizing their use on the sidewalks.
Thank you for your communication.

I know
This in the past few months, this town has turned me into... y'know... that old uncle that everyone has who is constantly complaining about all the bullshit going on.
I never wanted to be that guy, but I think it may be too late for me.

Ah! I see! Function like a Segway... as in "to slowly haul a lazy dude around who could just as easily get by with simply walking"? _________________ ------------[] O |

At least you're getting answers from official types, even if they aren't satisfactory ones. I'm too much of a lazy ass to even do that. |
